Innovation In Roll Monitoring At Brucutu Mine
The mining company Vale has taken an important step in the safety of its operations by deploying the first yard machine with 100% monitored rolls. Located at the Brucutu Mine in Minas Gerais, the Drum Reclaimer 3 is a crucial piece of equipment in feeding the processing plant.
In order to minimize the risks of fires on belt conveyors, which can affect both worker safety and company assets, Vale opted for the Vantage™ System, developed by Superior Industries.
This pioneering technology constantly monitors the load, impact, and return rolls of the Drum Reclaimer 3. Using various internal sensors, the Vantage™ System collects real-time data, such as bearing temperature and rotation, as well as monitoring bearing vibration in more recent hardware versions.

Special Flame-Retardant Rubber UL94-V0 Enhances Safety At The Plant
Another measure of safety adopted by Vale is the use of special flame-retardant rubber UL94-V0, also developed by Superior Industries.
With fully Brazilian technology, this solution coats and protects the impact and return rolls, exhibiting abrasion and hardness levels compatible with the conveyor belts.
This combination of innovations allows for greater control and continuous monitoring of the rolls, increasing safety at the processing plant.
Advantages Of The Technology And Alignment With ESG Concepts
The implementation of the Vantage™ System and UL94-V0 flame-retardant rubber provides several benefits for the mining company Vale. In addition to enhancing the safety of operations and workers, these technologies also facilitate monitoring of equipment conditions, allowing for interventions before more severe damage occurs.
These innovations are also aligned with ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) concepts, demonstrating Vale’s commitment to the safety of its employees, the implementation of new technologies, and the maintenance of machine availability.
Investments In Technology And Future Perspectives
With the growing demand for monitored rolls in critical applications, Superior Industries plans to continue improving its solutions.
Danilo Bibancos, director of Superior in Brazil, states that the cost of the technology is decreasing rapidly and he expects that soon, 100% of the rolls manufactured for mining in the country will leave the factory already monitored.
The presence of Superior’s solutions in the equipment also brings other less perceptible advantages, such as lower insurance costs due to the greater protection offered for the machines. With the success of the Vantage™ System in Drum Reclaimer 3, the expectation is that
