Minesto Concluded The Submarine Installation And Verified Launch And Recovery Procedures Of The Kite. Complete Analysis And Developed Operations.
Tidal energy has increasingly proven to be a promising source of renewable energy. The Swedish tidal energy company Minesto completed the installation of the submarine infrastructure and verified the launch and recovery procedures of the 1.2 MW tidal energy device that will soon be deployed in the waters of the Faroe Islands.
Like other marine energy sources, the energy generated from tides has great energy production potential. The device, nicknamed Dragon 12, is about to take off as Minesto completes the work of connecting the export cable to the device’s base, leaving the Vestmannasund site ready to receive energy production.
New Activities In Vestmanna
The completion of the submarine infrastructure included the relocation of the pre-installed junction box at the end of the export cable to a structure in the foundation to create a plug-and-play connection with the kite line.

Satisfactory Performance Of The Dragon 4 Device
Activities in Vestmanna are ramping up this winter with the satisfactory performance of Minesto’s smaller Dragon 4 device in terms of electricity production in November and December, in parallel with the installation work of the Dragon 12 system.
Launch And Recovery Operations
Minesto has also performed the launch and recovery operations of the Dragon 12, its first tidal kite on a megawatt scale weighing 25 tons.
Commissioning Completed On January 10
The commissioning of the launch and recovery system (LARS) for the 1.2 MW device was completed on January 10.
Complete Analysis Of Launch And Recovery
‘A complete analysis of the kite launch and recovery of the Dragon 12 plant in the last 24 hours successfully verified the key maritime operations of our kite-based energy plants. This is a truly unique procedure at the core of our competitive LCOE levels’, added Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto.
Electricity Production
The commissioning of the Dragon 12 continues on site, which will culminate in electricity production. The operations of the smaller Dragon 4 plants will continue in parallel, said Minesto.
