The Ministry of Mines and Energy asserted that the Equatorial Margin has potential to ensure Brazil’s self-sufficiency in oil production. Exploration of the region could prevent the country from depending on fuel imports in the future.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) reiterated, on Wednesday (27), the importance of the Equatorial Margin for the future of oil production in Brazil.
During an event in Brasília, Deputy Minister Pietro Mendes stated that the region is strategic for maintaining the country as an exporter and avoiding a future dependence on imports.
According to him, the area could generate over 300,000 jobs and move billions in royalties. These resources, according to the MME, would be directed to areas such as health, education, and infrastructure.

90 billion barrels of oil, 1.669 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 84% of probable reserves in offshore areas are under the Arctic, and the melting ice that opens maritime routes and exposes this energy treasure is turning the North Pole into a strategic dispute between the USA, Russia, China, and Canada for oil, gas, navigation, and military power.

“The Equatorial Margin represents a new frontier for oil and gas production in Brazil, and is a priority issue for the Ministry of Mines and Energy, as Minister Alexandre Silveira always emphasizes. In addition to ensuring our energy self-sufficiency, exploration of the region is expected to inject US$ 56 billion in investments into the economy, along with US$ 200 billion in state revenues, allowing these resources to be redirected to education, health, and infrastructure,” said Mendes.
Investments and Billion-Dollar Revenues
According to the MME, the exploration of the Equatorial Margin has the potential to attract US$ 56 billion in investments. The estimated revenues are even higher: US$ 200 billion in state resources.
The area, which extends from Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte, is considered promising. Studies by the Energy Research Company (EPE) indicate that the location could hold up to 10 billion barrels of oil. This would ensure national supply for the coming decades.
Without new discoveries, the scenario could change. Data show that if there are no investments, Brazil risks returning to oil imports by the end of the 2030s.
Safety in Exploration
Another point highlighted by the MME was the safety structure prepared for drilling wells in the region. According to Mendes, the largest response structure in the country is being directed toward the drilling of a single well.
“The resources allocated to the Amazon River Mouth Basin are equivalent to double those employed in both the Santos Basin and the Campos Basin for hundreds of wells,” he stated.
Petrobras, according to the deputy minister, has already invested around R$ 1 billion in the operation. But the continuation depends on the issuance of environmental licenses.
The seminar also featured the presence of Senator Randolfe Rodrigues, the Governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís, and the rector of UFRJ, Roberto Medronho.
Mendes concluded with a warning: without new discoveries, Brazil could forfeit up to R$ 3.9 trillion in revenue by 2055.
