History of the Golf GTI
Launched at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1975, the first model was modern and wild. In the summer of 1976, it created an automotive category that did not exist before: compact sports hatchbacks with front-wheel drive.
Originally, 5 units had been planned, but the affordable Golf GTI turned the automotive market on its head, bringing driving dynamics previously relegated to the world of expensive sports cars to the masses.
As a result, 461.690 Golf GTI Mk1 models rolled off the production lines. With its 8 successors to date, the model has become the most successful compact sports car in the world.
In June 1976, the model, priced at 13.850 German marks, was launched in Germany before achieving global success. It featured a top speed of 182 km/h and black wheel arch extensions, a black frame around the rear window, red surrounds and other details.
Golf Gti was never a popular Volkswagen car. Fake news.
