Unprecedented Unmanned Truck Can Be Controlled Remotely and Offer More Safety to Construction and Mining Workers
It may sound like a joke, but it isn’t. Andrade Gutierrez S.A., in partnership with Volvo and ACR, recently announced the launch of the newest remote-controlled truck. The model is called 4.zero and promises to assist workers in the mining and heavy construction sectors, where there is a need to move large quantities of material on worksites.
This new prototype created by major multinationals can be controlled with a joystick from up to 2.5 kilometers away and used on worksites to assist workers and avoid health issues, such as back problems, for example, when carrying heavy materials. Discover how this new technology works and where it can be applied below.

New Truck is an Invention Based on the Volvo FMX Off-Road Model with Smart Network Integration
The prototype presented was developed by a team of engineers based on the model of truck from Volvo that already exists in the market, the FMX off-road. However, it has received modifications that allow for more autonomous movement and integration with a smart network capable of driving the vehicle on its own.

Harley-Davidson created an entry-level motorcycle that seems impossible for those who only know the brand’s big bikes: the X440 uses a 440 cc single-cylinder engine, delivers 27 hp, 38 Nm, a declared fuel consumption of 35 km/l, and showcases a small, rational, and much more accessible Harley in India.

With an eye on consumers from Santa Catarina, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and Argentina, Havan is launching a mega store worth R$ 90 million on the side of a busy highway, in an investment that Luciano Hang classifies as one of the most important in the expansion.
“It is the first truck that comes directly off the production line ready to operate via remote control. The major technological leap of this solution lies in the VDS (Volvo Dynamic Steering), an advanced steering system created by the brand, which is fully integrated into the vehicle and controls driving with high precision. There is no need to install parallel sensors or actuators. The engine, transmission, brakes, and VDS steering are all original, which ensures more safety and availability for the vehicle.”
Jeseniel Valério, Sales Engineering Manager at Volvo (2022).
The model marketed by Volvo, now modified in partnership with Andrade Gutierrez and automation company ACR, features a 6 X 4 traction system and a capacity of up to 42 tons. ACR sells a radio transmission model HBC Radiomatic, produced by a German company, and employed this system to control the truck. Andrade Gutierrez S.A., for its part, was responsible for organization and testing in operations.
The Created Model without Drivers Can Be Operated Only in Confined Areas, Free of Pedestrians
The truck model created by Volvo and Andrade Gutierrez S.A. can be remotely controlled only in closed areas, meaning without the presence of pedestrians. This ensures safety for operations in mining and construction. However, the truck can also be operated by people using traditional driving methods in any environment.
The control panel has various options for the operator, allowing fast or slow steering based on the needs of the works. The transmission is fully automated by Volvo to assist in remote mobility and ensure necessary traction.
“Supported by Engineering 4.0, we are always seeking innovative solutions, and we have identified a significant opportunity to contribute to the development of the infrastructure and mining sectors. The use of this truck in our services will lead us to better results in material transport operations, reducing risk and bringing reliability and safety.”
João Martins, President of Andrade Gutierrez (2022)
The screen offers up to 20 options to coordinate all movements of the unprecedented truck, as well as sound alerts that ensure safety. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with 7 cameras to ensure movement quality and can transmit sounds to everyone present in the cabin.
