The Multinational BorgWarner Will Build a Battery Factory for Electric Vehicles in Piracicaba (SP). The Announcement Was Made 3 Months After the Acquisition of AKASOL, Battery Manufacturer
The multinational BorgWarner announced on Friday (13) that it will develop a battery factory for electric vehicles in the municipality of Piracicaba (SP), within its unit that manufactures components for replacement and injection systems. The information was confirmed by the company’s aftermarket vice president for South America, Amaury Oliveira, during an interview at Autopar 2022. According to the executive, the company acquired Akasol and is developing a battery factory in SP to equip the electric vehicles that will be manufactured in South America and also for export.
Understand BorgWarner’s Plans
The expectation, according to Oliveira, is that the battery factory for electric cars will be ready by next year. Akasol is a manufacturer of batteries for electric cars founded in 2008 in Germany.
The unit in Brazil will join a factory in the United States and the Gigafactory 1, located in Europe since last year. The executive did not disclose the details of the project, such as the size of the unit in SP, production capacity, and the automotive companies it plans to serve.

To advance in the OEM and replacement market, BorgWarner uses two main projects, which are the acquisition of other companies that can contribute to its business and also the expansion of its portfolio. During this year’s Autopar, a fair for automotive suppliers held in Pinhais (PR), new products for the replacement market were presented, such as new steering and suspension lines that serve 80% of the premium vehicle sector.
Other Launches Presented by the Multinational
Ignition coils for over 4.5 million vehicles, clutches for heavy vehicles, compressors, national start-stop engines, and oxygen sensors will also be part of the launches presented by the company.
The multinational BorgWarner, in addition to the battery factory for electric vehicles in SP, announced a change in the visual communication of its parts for the light replacement sector with the unification of all brands as BorgWarner.
In the heavy sector, brands will be maintained, such as Delphi. Oliveira commented on the expectations for this year, stating that the multinational is observing points of concern such as the dollar, rising costs, and the situation in China, but so far the performance this year has been positive and he expects it to continue that way in the coming months.
BorgWarner Acquires AKASOL
BorgWarner and AKASOL announced in February this year a Business Combination Agreement, and at the time, BorgWarner’s CEO, Frédéric Lissalde, stated that AKASOL is an excellent strategic fit, as the multinational aims to continue expanding its electrification portfolio and capitalizing on the deep change in the industry towards the implementation of electric vehicles.
The manufacturing presence of the battery producer batteries and the established production customer base are complementary to the multinational and aim to accelerate its presence in the rapidly expanding market for commercial vehicles and off-road batteries. Based in Darmstadt, Germany, AKASOL develops and produces customizable batteries for buses, rail vehicles, commercial vehicles, and industrial vehicles, as well as ships and boats.
The company’s system technology is cell-independent, providing a flexible and cost-effective solution for world-class customers. With over 300 employees and three factories in Germany and one in the US, the company believes it is well-positioned to capitalize on the significant market opportunity in North America and Europe.
