Paper Excellence plans to invest R$20 billion in the construction of a new cellulose factory in Mato Grosso do Sul, aiming to strengthen its position in the Brazilian market. The project promises to generate thousands of jobs and boost the local economy, highlighting the state as a hub for industrial development.

In a movement that promises to transform the sector industrial in Mato Grosso do Sul, Paper Excellence, one of the largest paper and cellulose producers in the world, is evaluating the construction of a new cellulose factory in the state. The estimated investment is R$20 billion, according to sources linked to the negotiation. The expectation is that thousands of jobs will be created.

Expansion plans and billion-dollar investment for factory in Brazil

The news came to light after a meeting between Indonesian businessman Jackson Wijaya, founder of Paper Excellence, and the governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Eduardo Riedel.

During the meeting, Wijaya expressed interest in expanding the company's business in the region, reinforcing the strategic importance of Mato Grosso do Sul for the sector cellulose.

Jackson Wijaya is not new to announcing big plans.

In 2023, he had already revealed his intention to invest around US$4 billion in a new cellulose project in Brazil, with an estimated production capacity of 2,5 million tons per year.

Confirmation of the exact location for this new factory, however, was still under analysis.

Mato Grosso do Sul as a development hub

Mato Grosso do Sul emerges as one of the favorites to receive this gigantic investment due to its already consolidated infrastructure in the sector.

The eastern region of the state, known as “Vale da Celulose”, is identified as the ideal location for the new factory.

This area already houses the Três Lagoas factory, where Eldorado Celulose, of which Paper Excellence holds a 49,41% stake, produced 1,78 million tons of cellulose in 2023.

Although Mato Grosso do Sul is well positioned, Paper Excellence is also exploring other regions in Brazil to install the new factory.

Minas Gerais, for example, has been analyzed as a potential candidate, with Pirapora and Grão Mogol in the Jequitinhonha Valley among possible locations.

Furthermore, the state of Mato Grosso, specifically the Alto Taquari region, is also being considered.

Economic impact and job creation in the new factory

The construction of a new cellulose factory in Mato Grosso do Sul would not only strengthen the state's position as a cellulose hub.

But it would also generate thousands of jobs direct and indirect, in addition to boosting the local economy.

With an investment of R$20 billion, the economic impact would be significant, ranging from the construction of the plant to its full operation.

Global production and expansion of Paper Excellence

Currently, Paper Excellence has six pulp and paper mills in Canada, with an annual production of more than 2,5 million tons.

The expansion into Brazil is part of a global growth and diversification strategy, aiming to further consolidate its presence in the international market.

The partnership with J&F Investimentos in Eldorado Celulose highlights Paper Excellence's commitment to investing in sustainable and long-term projects in Brazil.

The company is committed to promoting sustainable practices in cellulose production, ensuring that new investments meet strict environmental standards and contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

Therefore, the possible construction of a new cellulose factory by Paper Excellence in Mato Grosso do Sul represents a significant milestone for the state's industrial sector.

With a billion-dollar investment and the creation of thousands of jobs, the project has the potential to transform the local economy and further strengthen Brazil's position as a global leader in cellulose production.
