Hedge Planted Every 20 Cm Transforms Farm Into A Natural, Cost-Effective, And Much More Sustainable Barrier Than A Traditional 2.5-Meter Wall
When the owner started building the farm, he needed to enclose 90 linear meters of land. Initially, he sought quotes from masons to build a traditional 2.5-meter high wall. One of the professionals charged R$ 30,000 for the entire extension.
However, instead of investing that high amount, he decided to bet on a natural and economical solution. He chose to plant a hedge. The result was astonishing: the entire 90-meter stretch cost only R$ 700, and he did the planting himself.
Since then, the green wall has not only replaced masonry but has also brought security, aesthetics, and sustainability to the property.

Fast Growth And Complete Closure In Just 2 Years
The owner planted seedlings of the wild lemon with approximately 10 to 12 cm in height. Even starting small, the plants grew remarkably. In just 2 years, they reached a height of 3.10 meters.
Moreover, he followed a strategic planting guideline. The seller recommended spacing of 20 cm between each seedling to ensure complete closure. He applied exactly this technique.
As a result, the branches began to intertwine naturally. Today, no one can see the street through the vegetation. The hedge literally became a green wall.
Meanwhile, had he chosen Murtinha (also called cafezinho), he would have had to wait about 4 years to reach a similar height. Although Murtinha produces very fragrant flowers and has a woody trunk, it grows more slowly and does not have thorns.
Enhanced Security With Natural Thorns
One of the decisive factors in choosing the plant was the presence of large, rigid thorns. These thorns significantly increase security.
Unlike a traditional wall, which someone can scale, this hedge makes it difficult both to pass through and to attempt to jump over. The plant has initial flexibility, but the trunk becomes increasingly woody over time, enhancing structural resistance.
Additionally, the wild lemon withstands long periods of drought. Between April and September — or even October, depending on the year — the plant endures the drought without major issues. The owner obtained the seedlings from the Central-West region in the state of Goiás, where the climate is hot and dry. Thus, the species already has natural adaptation to intense heat.
Extremely Low Cost Compared To The Traditional Wall
From a financial perspective, the difference is impressive. The conventional wall would cost R$ 30,000. The hedge cost R$ 700 for the same 90 linear meters.
Moreover, if he had bought seeds instead of seedlings, the cost could decrease even further.
Therefore, when we analyze cost-benefit, the green wall proves to be extremely advantageous.
Downsides: Ants And Periodic Maintenance

However, not everything works perfectly from the start.
In the initial phase, when the seedlings still have young shoots, leafcutter ants can attack. In some areas, the leafcutters destroyed newly planted plants. The owner had to replant in those spots.
Once the trunk became more woody, the ants lost interest.
Another important point involves maintenance. Since the plant grows rapidly, he needs to perform regular pruning, about 2 to 3 times a year.
Although this frequency does not seem high, pruning requires physical effort. He needs to cut inside and outside the hedge, collect the branches, and dispose of them properly.
Additionally, the thorns require constant care. Even using thick gloves and boots, eventually, some thorn might pierce the protection.
Emotional Benefit And Property Appreciation
Despite the maintenance, the owner claims that the result is worth it. Every morning, when he opens the window and sees the green wall, he feels satisfaction.
Several studies indicate that visual contact with green areas reduces anxiety and promotes a sense of tranquility. Therefore, in addition to saving R$ 30,000, the green wall also improves the quality of life.
This information was shared on the channel “Chácara Araucária,” where the owner details costs, growth, maintenance, and security of the hedge.
Additionally, he announced that he will soon share the construction costs of the farm’s bunker, further expanding the content on investment and rural planning.
Would you invest R$ 30,000 in a traditional wall or bet R$ 700 on a natural solution like this?
