Naturgy Invests R$ 672.3 Million in RJ to Expand Natural Gas Infrastructure, Meet Growing Demand and Develop Industrial Hubs.

On October 5, 2023, Naturgy, responsible for managing natural gas in the state of Rio de Janeiro, announced a robust investment of R$ 672.3 million. The objective is to expand the current infrastructure, ensuring that piped gas reaches new communities and meets an ever-increasing demand. This movement promises to revolutionize the fuel market by proposing cleaner and more efficient alternatives, such as CNG. The company’s effort aims not only to expand its operations but also to solidify its position as a leader in innovation and safety in energy supply.

With the vision of meeting a growing demand, Naturgy will focus on developing industrial hubs by 2025. The safety of the piped gas distribution system will be a top priority. This means that during the expansion process, the company will ensure that each new connection is made with maximum efficiency, without compromising the safety of the network. This is essential, as the natural gas market is booming, and the need for sustainable solutions has never been higher. The goal is to provide easier access for everyone, benefiting both businesses and residential consumers.

Exponential Growth and Technological Innovation

The new projects planned for the next two years also include technological improvements to the distribution network. In January 2024, the company will begin to introduce automated systems that allow greater control over the gas supply flow. By leveraging this new method, Naturgy seeks to optimize its operations and minimize risks. This technological advancement is driven by the increasing need for security in the energy sector.

In addition to improving infrastructure, the expansion will focus on sustainability. With growing environmental concerns, natural gas positions itself as the ideal choice, both for its low emissions and its cost-effectiveness compared to other types of fossil fuels. According to sources from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the demand for CNG has increased by 15% in the last two years, corroborating Naturgy’s expansion strategies.

It is clear that these measures are just the beginning of a complete transformation in the fuel sector. The initiatives aim not only to expand the current network but also to innovate the way natural gas is distributed and utilized, bringing not only efficiency but also promoting inclusion and accessibility for all market players.

Economic Impact and Sustainability Take Center Stage

The impact of this investment on the local economy will be significant. With the creation of direct and indirect jobs, the project is expected to generate thousands of new opportunities. Unions and local associations look forward to the unfolding of these actions, as economic strengthening and innovation go hand in hand in this endeavor.

By the end of 2023, Naturgy will complete the initial phases of the project’s implementation, positioning itself as a pioneer in this rising market. This strategic movement reflects not only a commitment to regional progress but also a vision for the future incorporated into best international practices. According to official statements from the state government, the positive impact of this growth is reflected in all social spheres, providing another layer to the already rich economic tapestry of Rio de Janeiro.

Investments in Infrastructure and Natural Gas Expansion

In the next two years, a significant investment will be made in the construction of new gas pipelines and the expansion of the necessary infrastructure to support the growing demand for piped natural gas in the interior. These investments aim to strengthen the safety of the distribution system, facilitating the connection of new customers and expansion into new areas in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Naturgy is committed to bringing this vital resource to previously unexplored regions.

In addition to reinforcing the system, the projects aim to stimulate the local economy, generating direct and indirect jobs, and fostering the development of industrial hubs that will be able to benefit from a cleaner and more efficient energy source. According to Katia Repsold, country manager of Naturgy in Brazil, the arrival of natural gas to 18 municipalities in five regions of the state will be an important milestone. Of these municipalities, 17 already have piped natural gas, but there is potential for further infrastructure expansion and increased supply capacity.

Broad Benefits for Municipalities and Industries

New investments will allow the city of Araruama to start receiving fuel soon, reinforcing local economic growth. The cities of Barra Mansa, Barra do Piraí, Itatiaia, Piraí, Porto Real, Angra dos Reis, Petrópolis, Teresópolis, Três Rios, Nova Friburgo, Saquarema, São Pedro da Aldeia, Casimiro de Abreu, Rio das Ostras, Volta Redonda, Macaé, and Campos dos Goytacazes will be among the beneficiaries. The presence of piped natural gas in these localities will contribute to a more robust infrastructure, while also meeting the growing demand for this energy source.

Trunk Networks and Sustainable Corridors

Among the highlighted investment projects is the expansion of Sustainable Corridors. This project aims to expand the trunk network, which will now bring natural gas to new regions, promoting the use of CNG in heavy vehicles as an alternative to diesel. This initiative aligns with decarbonization policies, seeking a cleaner energy matrix for transportation. Currently, there are 11 adapted fuel stations along the Dutra and Washington Luís highways.

By replacing diesel with natural gas, it is possible for 1,000 heavy vehicles to reduce emissions by 52 tons of CO2 equivalent, corresponding to the CO2 absorption of 200 trees. In addition to allowing more trucks and buses to adopt CNG, the Sustainable Corridors will serve as a pillar in advancing the distribution network. This will open doors to potential markets in the future, including commercial, industrial, and residential segments.

Adaptation of Stations and Growth Potentials

As part of the planning, Araruama, a municipality with about 130,000 inhabitants, will initially receive piped gas to supply CNG stations. The company has already identified the opportunity to adapt stations on RJ 106 to connect the main municipalities of the Baixada Litorânea to the North Fluminense and the state of Espírito Santo. This network will serve over 48,000 households, around 150 commercial establishments, and 21 small industries, offering these communities access to a more sustainable and economical energy resource, as we overcome the challenge of connecting remote locations to major consumer centers.
