Operation at the Pitu Oeste Well, in the Equatorial Margin, in Deep Waters, Will Begin This Month. Meeting Environmental License and Ensuring Energy Security.
The drilling ship arrived in the state of Rio Grande do Norte this Sunday (17) and will begin operations this month at the BM-POT-17 concession. The license for drilling exploratory wells in the deep waters of the Potiguar Basin was granted by IBAMA in October 2023. The first well will be drilled 52 km off the coast. With the exploratory research, the company aims to obtain more geological information about the area to assess the economic viability and extent of the oil discovery made in 2013 in the state of Pará.
Drilling is a fundamental step to ensure the country’s energy security. Petrobras plans the excavation of the Anhangá well at the POT-M-762 concession, 79 km off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, and near the Pitu Oeste well. The forecast is that its drilling will last from 3 to 5 months. The last well in this concession was drilled in 2015.
Confirmation of Drilling at the BM-POT-17 Concession
The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) reported today that the drilling of an exploratory well in the geological area of the Equatorial Margin, in deep waters, at the BM-POT-17 concession, has obtained an environmental license to proceed with the exploratory activities.

The drilling of the well, which is part of the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan of the company, aims to increase the country’s energy security through the search for oil and natural gas reservoirs in the Guanabara Bay region.
The ANP emphasized the importance of following all safety protocols during the drilling process, ensuring environmental integrity and the protection of the geological area in question. The BM-POT-17 concession is strategic for the energy sector, so all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that drilling operations are conducted responsibly and sustainably.
The company responsible for drilling the well also reinforced its commitment to environmental preservation standards and the safety of drilling operations, highlighting the importance of obtaining the environmental license to continue exploration work in the Equatorial Margin region. The expectation is that the drilling of the well will provide important data for advancing research in search of new oil and natural gas reserves.
