Neptune Energy Announces Gas Discovery in the Kyrre Prospect, Confirming Volumes for the Ofelia Evaluation Well.
Neptune Energy and its partners have announced a new discovery in the Kyrre prospect and confirmed the volumes for the Ofelia evaluation well, both located in license PL 929, near the Gjøa field, in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Neptune has successfully completed the evaluation well of Ofelia, 35/6-4 ST2, in the Agat formation. The estimated recoverable volume is in the range of 16-33 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe).
Additionally, the sidetrack 35/6-4 A was drilled in the overlying Kyrre prospect, resulting in a new gas discovery. The estimated recoverable resources are between 11-19 mmboe of gas, raising the total recoverable volume from both discoveries to approximately 27-52 mmboe. The new gas find represents a significant advance for the energy industry in the region.
Gas Discovery in the Greater Gjøa Strengthens Development Potential
The CEO of Neptune Energy for Norway and the UK, Odin Estensen, emphasized: ‘Confirming the volume of Ofelia, as well as making another gas find nearby, further strengthens our understanding of the Greater Gjøa area, which is an important growth hub for our business in Norway. The dual discoveries enable potentially fast, low-cost, and low-carbon development.’

Located 23 kilometers north of the Gjøa platform operated by Neptune, Ofelia Agat and Kyrre will be considered for development as a tie-back to Gjøa. Neptune will also assess whether the company’s oil and gas discovery Gjøa Nord (Hamlet), with estimated recoverable volumes between 8-24 mmboe, can be developed together.
The Gjøa platform is electrified with power from the shore and produces less than half the average carbon intensity of fields in the Norwegian Continental Shelf1.
Director of Exploration and Development at Neptune in Norway, Steinar Meland, said: ‘The reservoir quality in the Kyrre discovery is very good, allowing for high production rates. We are preparing for several other interesting exploration opportunities in the area, such as the Cerisa well early next year.’
Platform Operated by Neptune Energy
The wells 35/6-4 ST2 and 35/6-4 A were drilled by the Deepsea Yantai, a semi-submersible platform owned by CIMC and operated by Odfjell Drilling.
The project partners include operator Neptune Energy (40%), Wintershall Dea (20%), Pandion Energy (20%), Aker BP (10%), and DNO (10%)
