NIO, Chinese Startup, Launches New Electric Sedan Promising Over 1,000 km of Range. Check All the Details of the Electric Car Equipped with 150 kWh Semi-Solid Batteries.

Range remains one of the biggest challenges for electric cars. In response, innovative manufacturers, such as the Chinese startup NIO, are focused on developing more advanced and efficient battery technologies. These new batteries aim to provide greater range, significantly improving the driving experience on long trips, which is precisely the new proposal of the NIO ET7 electric sedan.

Recently, William Li, co-founder and CEO of NIO, along with the co-pilot, took a trip to personally test the new 150 kWh semi-solid state battery developed by the also Chinese WeLion.

The executive drove a NIO ET7 sedan achieving a range of 1,044 km without stopping to recharge, completing the journey with 3% battery charge remaining. According to data from the website CarNewsChina, the 14-hour trip with the NIO electric sedan was streamed live online, starting on Sunday morning at 6:32 AM at the battery swap station (PSS) in Shanghai, arriving at a destination near Xiamen.

During 92% of the time, the NIO electric sedan operated on Navigate-on-Pilot+ (NOP+), NIO’s autonomous driving system, with a maximum speed limited to 90 km/h. In the final report, the travel time, excluding stops, was 12.4 hours, with an average speed of 84.9 km/h, energy consumption of 13.2 kWh/100 km, and the temperature ranged from -2°C to 12°C.

The battery manufacturer WeLion developed the 150 kWh SSB that was announced nearly 3 years ago at NIODay, held in January 2021, when NIO’s first electric sedan, the ET7, was launched.

New Semi-Solid State Battery Costs Around US$ 40,000

In cell-to-pack configuration (single cell battery), the battery installed in the NIO electric sedan has an energy density of 360 Wh/kfg, while the entire package has a density of 260 Wh/kg. NIO claims a cooling system six times stronger than conventional electric car batteries.

The complete 150 kWh package measures 2,062 mm in length, 1,539 mm in width, and 186 mm in height, weighing 575 kg, exactly 20 kg more than NIO’s current 100 kWh package. According to the Chinese automaker, mass production of this new battery will begin in April next year; however, it will be more expensive, with an estimated cost of around US$ 40,000.

NIO Also Partners Focused on Battery Swap Stations

In November, NIO and Geely signed a cooperation agreement regarding the battery swap segment for electric vehicles in Hangzhou. Prior to that, the holding company, which owns the Volvo brand among other automakers, announced a goal of 5,000 battery swap stations by 2025.

Focusing on expanding this type of service, known as BaaS, the collaboration will work on developing battery swap standards, promoting and constructing the stations themselves. Recently, NIO also reached an agreement with the state-owned Changan.

In the future, NIO’s battery swap stations will not only serve passenger models from various brands, such as NIO, Changan, and Geely, but will also serve commercial vehicles, and the battery swap stations will become public infrastructure in the era of smart electric cars.

Simultaneously, with the support of various companies, battery swapping will become the main mode of energy replenishment in the industry, enhancing the energy replenishment experience for electric vehicle users, and the battery swap stations promise to be more efficient.
