Mining In The Pantanal Gains New Impulse With The Recovery Of The Paraguay River And Billion-Dollar Investments By LHG Mining In National Inland Logistics
After almost two years of difficulties, the mining sector in the Pantanal is experiencing a new moment with the recovery of the levels of the Paraguay River. This Wednesday (April 30), the river reached 2.36 meters, the highest level since 2023. In that year, this same period recorded 3.20 meters. The new level allows an efficient flow of production of ore from the region.
Advance Of LHG Mining
The company LHG Mining is one of the most affected by the change. With only three years in the market, it seeks to double its current production, which this year is expected to be 12 million tons.
The goal is to reach 25 million tons with an investment of R$ 4 billion announced in April. The extraction occurs in the municipalities of Corumbá and Ladário, and the data is in the Environmental Impact Report submitted to Imasul.

This advance depends on the inland waterway of the Paraguay River, which is essential for cargo transportation. According to Antaq, in February, the river recorded 1.53 meters on the Ladário gauge, a level already considered satisfactory for navigation.
Even so, the growth has been significant. At the Gregório Curvo Terminal alone, port movement rose 84% in ore transportation, all aimed at export.
Logistical Advantage Of The Waterway
The barge is the main tool for the flow, capable of replacing up to 3,000 trucks on the roads. This brings more agility and competitiveness to the sector, especially in exports to China.
LHG Mining has its own port, which facilitates operations and reduces dependence on outsourced services.
Since its foundation, the company has invested in its own structure. More than 2,000 employees are part of the fixed staff. The model adopted differs from what was practiced by Vale, with outsourcing now being restricted.
In March, the company held a job fair and still has more than ten job openings, with opportunities in the logistics sector and also in Paraguay.
Fleet Expansion And National Incentive
Inland transportation is the responsibility of LHG Logística, a subsidiary of the mining company. The company received financing of R$ 3.7 billion from BNDES, approved in September 2024, to modernize the fleet.
The amount will be used for the construction of up to 400 barges and 15 push boats. The rule of the agreement was clear: everything must be produced in Brazil.
Even with offers 20% cheaper from companies in China, the government preferred to incentivize the national industry. According to Aloizio Mercadante, president of BNDES, the operation helps to reactivate Brazilian shipyards and supports the decarbonization of transport.
New Phase In Brazilian Logistics
The construction is being carried out in shipyards in the North and Northeast regions. With this reinforcement, LHG Mining will be responsible for increasing inland transportation fleet by 16% in Brazil. According to the company’s president, the goal is to open a new phase in the national logistics sector.
The project also anticipates an increase of 5.9 million tons in annual production. The route of the barges is 2,500 kilometers, starting from Corumbá and going to Nueva Palmira, Uruguay, near Buenos Aires.
