New 1,371 km Waterway Promises to Revolutionize Cargo Transportation in Brazil Linking the Northeast to the Southeast and the Lives of Over 11 Million People

If you think that cargo transportation in Brazil is limited to highways full of trucks and potholes, prepare yourself: The Northeast is about to experience a quiet, yet decisive revolution. With 1,371 navigable kilometers, the New São Francisco Waterway is not only a new logistics axis but also a complete reconfiguration of cargo transportation between the Brazilian Southeast and Northeast. It is estimated that in the first year alone, 5 million tons of cargo will cross the Old Chico, with unprecedented economy, efficiency, and sustainability for the region.

The initiative, announced by the Federal Government at an official ceremony in the city of Petrolina (PE), was described as a strategic project for the future of national logistics. “This is a very important issue for the development of the Northeast,” stated Minister Silvio Costa Filho. The forecast is that the Bahia Port Authority (Codeba) will be responsible for executing the project, with technical support from Infra SA.

Logistics Corridor Anticipates Integration with Highways and Railways

The proposal goes far beyond navigating the São Francisco: it anticipates integration with highways and railways, creating a true multimodal corridor for cargo flow. Grains, beverages, limestone, plaster, gypsum, agricultural inputs, salt, and even ore will be able to circulate with reduced costs and lower environmental impact.

In practice, the waterway will create a direct connection route between the Central-South of the country and the Northeast, facilitating the transportation of large volumes more efficiently than traditional road transport. According to the national waterways secretary, Dino Antunes, this represents a “cleaner, more efficient, and competitive logistics.”

This new route promises to boost the productive hubs of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, and neighboring states. The Port of Aratu-Candeias, in the All Saints Bay, will be one of the main points for shipping goods, with the possibility of expansion to the ports of Ilhéus and even international exports.

Mega Project Will Be Executed in Three Phases

The project will be executed in three phases. In the first, interventions will focus on the 604 km between Juazeiro, Petrolina, and Ibotirama, utilizing the Sobradinho reservoir to ensure continuous navigability. Goods will then be transported by truck to the Port of Aratu.

In the second phase, there will be an additional 172 km navigable between Ibotirama and Bom Jesus da Lapa, connecting to the railway network up to the Bahian ports. Finally, the third phase will expand the waterway to Pirapora in Minas Gerais, totaling 1,371 km of commercial navigation.

The project reaches an area where more than 11 million people live and encompasses 505 municipalities, crossing six states: Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Alagoas, and Goiás, in addition to the Federal District. The importance of the São Francisco River for the economic and social survival of these communities makes the initiative even more relevant.

A New Chapter for the Northeast and the Old Chico

The expectation is that this waterway represents a leap in quality not only in cargo transportation but also in the development of the Northeast. According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, more than 11 million people and 505 municipalities live along the banks of the São Francisco River, an area with enormous potential for economic growth.

“This is a very important issue for the development of the Northeast; it will be very strategic for the region,” declared Minister Silvio Costa Filho, during the official announcement made in Petrolina on July 13, 2025.

According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, this will be one of the largest logistical interventions of the century in Brazil, with a direct impact on the competitiveness of the northeastern economy. And with the decentralization to Codeba, there is an expectation that technical studies will begin later this year.

For logistics experts, the waterway has the potential to significantly reduce freight costs between agricultural production regions and industrial and consumer centers in the South and Southeast, in addition to creating new development hubs along the route.

The Government also intends to use the project as a lever for social and infrastructure initiatives in riverside cities, including revitalization of banks, dredging of critical segments and improvement of local river ports.

Currently, Brazil has 12,000 kilometers of navigable waterways, with the potential to reach 42,000 kilometers, according to the Ministry of Ports and Airports.

Do you believe that the New São Francisco Waterway can truly change the game in cargo transportation in Brazil? Do you think the Northeast will finally receive the logistical investment it deserves?
