Fortescue announces a radical shift by replacing diesel with a system featuring 1.2 GW of solar energy, 600 MW of wind energy, and up to 5 GWh in batteries, a giant project that could save $100 million per year and transform heavy mining into one of the largest 100% renewable operations in the world by 2028.
The new offshore wind turbine factory is also part of the UK Government’s strategy to develop jobs, infrastructure, and supply chains, thus achieving the target of 40GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.
Offshore Wind Farm
The Dogger Bank offshore wind farm represents the largest investment in offshore wind energy worldwide and plays a crucial role in the UK’s ambition to increase energy capacity and supply.
It will be constructed in 3 phases, with an installed capacity of 3.6 GW, utilizing the offshore Haliade-X wind turbine from GE. Additionally, it will generate electricity to power 6 million homes in the UK.
According to project director Steve Wilson, the company is very proud to say that the farm is the anchor project for today’s announcement of GE’s new offshore wind turbine blade production facility.
The Growth of Offshore Wind Energy
This energy market has been progressing significantly, especially in the United States, after making inroads into Europe. The projection is for the country to build large-scale farms by 2023, with expectations to reach 10GW by 2026.
Brazil has also been actively exploring this market. The country has the potential to deploy up to 700GW of offshore wind energy. Thus, this energy modality can contribute to the growth of the source in Brazil, with the construction of large offshore farms and high energy generation.
