Official Tests Indicate Consumption and Performance Similar to E27, but Experts Warn of Increased Attention to Some Models of Cars That Are Only Gasoline and Older.
Since August 1, 2025, regular and additive gasoline has contained 30% anhydrous ethanol in the blend, the new mix is called gasoline E30. The change was defined by the National Council for Energy Policy (CNPE) in Resolution No. 9/2025, and applies nationwide. According to the ANP, the rule also raised quality requirements, without altering the procedure for measuring the ethanol content in “gasoline C” sold to consumers.
The regulation came in the wake of the Fuel of the Future Program (Law 14.993/2024), which updated the legal framework and expanded the margin for the government to adjust the mandatory percentage up to a cap of 35% when technical feasibility allows. In other words: E30 is a step within a larger plan for decarbonization and efficiency gains.
To preserve the performance of gasoline E30, the ANP proposed adjustments to the specifications — including raising the minimum RON (Research Octane Number) for gasoline C from 93 to 94 to maintain quality even with more ethanol in the mix. Expected result: fuel with higher octane and compatible with modern engines.

Official Tests with E30: Consumption, Performance, and Emissions
The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) released a study from the Mauá Institute of Technology (IMT) that evaluated 16 cars and 13 motorcycles representative of the national fleet. Central conclusion: no significant negative impacts on consumption, drivability, or emissions were found when comparing E27 (previous blend) to E30. The tests included cold start, idle stability, and tests in laboratory and track.
In practice, this means that, on average, drivers should not notice a difference in everyday use solely due to E30. This is the technical point supported by the government to state that the adoption of the new blend is viable and safe for the fleet.
Still, real usage conditions, such as heavy traffic, load, altitude, temperature, and maintenance condition, can cause consumption variations among vehicles and regions, which is expected with any fuel. Tracking consumption per tank and following maintenance remains the best way to evaluate your case. (Technical basis in the MME/IMT report.)
Experts’ Criticisms: When E30 Can Be Concerning
The adoption of E30 has also raised methodological questions. Engineer Gerson Borini pointed out flaws in the criteria for vehicle selection, the construction of a baseline (comparing E27 vs. E30 in the same car, under the same conditions), and the design of the cold start tests.
The IMT and MME, in turn, defend that the tests adhered to standards, with triplicated protocols and use of OBD scanner to check for failures. Translation for the reader: there is legitimate technical debate, and monitoring real-world behavior over the coming months makes sense.
A recurring warning among experts is regarding the gasoline-only car, especially old or carbureted. Since ethanol has a lower calorific value, there may be a tendency for richer mixtures and higher internal temperatures in engines without electronics capable of compensating adequately, which can accelerate wear in severe uses. Flex vehicles, on the other hand, are designed to operate with high proportions of ethanol and tend not to have issues with gasoline E30.
Price of Gasoline with E30: Did It Drop, Rise, or Stay the Same?
The government hinted at the possibility of a drop of up to R$ 0.11 per liter with the new blend, but what is observed at the pumps is a mixed picture. Recent data cited by the media shows, for instance, a slight increase in São Paulo (from R$ 6.07 to R$ 6.12) and a decrease in Vitória (ES) (from R$ 5.98 to R$ 5.84) between late July and mid-August, according to ANP records. In other words, the impact varies by location, and margins of the supply chain (refining, distribution, and resale) influence the final price.
In addition to the price per liter, it’s useful to remember that consumption per kilometer also impacts costs. Even if the liter drops slightly, a possible increase in consumption in certain vehicles may offset the savings — another reason to monitor the real autonomy of your car in the coming weeks.
Which Gasoline to Use: E30 Regular/Additive vs. Premium Gasoline (25%)
To avoid confusion, premium gasoline still contains 25% anhydrous ethanol and is not included in E30. It is usually recommended when the manufacturer’s manual requires higher octane or when there is knocking (“pinging”) in high compression engines. For the vast majority of cars, regular/additive gasoline E30 meets the specifications and is suitable for daily use, as long as the vehicle is well maintained.
If your model is old and only gasoline (especially carbureted), it’s worth discussing mixture adjustments and checking lambda sensor, sensors, and ignition system with a trusted mechanic, precautions that reduce the risk of lean mixture and overheating in severe use.
E30 at the Pump: How to Inspect (Test the Graduated Cylinder) and Transition Rule
Consumers can request the graduated cylinder test at the pump. The formula has not changed: the aqueous phase is measured after mixing 50 mL of gasoline with saline solution up to 100 mL; the calculation of the % of anhydrous ethanol remains % EAC = [(A − 50) × 2] + 1, where A is the level of the aqueous phase. For E30 compliance, the reading typically falls between 64 and 65 mL in the graduated cylinder. Save the receipt and request the report if you suspect quality issues.
There is also a transition period: until 08/30/2025, the ANP will not apply precautionary measures when finding 26% to 31% of ethanol in regular/additive gasoline at dealerships (managing stock). Attention: if the gas station purchased after August 1 outside the new standard, it may be penalized outside the range of 29% to 31%. For complaints, use the Fala.BR channel.
Practical tip: refuel at reliable stations, check seals and receiving procedures, and monitor the check engine light. Any recurring failure after the fuel change warrants a diagnostic check.
Consumption and Maintenance with Gasoline E30
Will It Yield More or Less? On average, tests did not show relevant differences in consumption. However, due to physical-chemical fundamentals, some vehicles (especially older and gasoline-only) may consume a bit more with E30 if calibration does not compensate. The safe approach is to measure your real consumption (km driven ÷ liters) over 2 to 3 consecutive refuels and compare it with historical data.
To minimize any effect: keep air filter, sensors, and injection in check; use fuel from reliable sources; avoid running low with very low fuel; and follow the manual. In cold regions, observe the startup behavior on the first mornings with E30 and, if you notice difficulties, document and take it to the mechanic.
