New Bolsa Família Rule In 2025 Keeps Minimum Payment Of R$ 600 For Up To 12 Months Even When Family Income Rises And Still Guarantees Priority Return To The Program In Up To 36 Months.
The federal government created a new Protection Rule for the Bolsa Família in 2025. With it, families that receive an increase in income but still live in fragile situations will not lose the benefit immediately. From now on, they can continue receiving half of the Bolsa Família amount for up to 12 months, even if their income exceeds the limit of R$ 218 per person.
The minimum guaranteed amount is R$ 600 per month per family, plus additional amounts of R$ 150 per child under 6 years old and R$ 50 for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and youth aged 7 to 18.
How The Rule Works In Practice
- If the family’s income exceeds the limit of R$ 218 per person, they continue receiving 50% of the benefit for up to 12 months.
- The rule applies as long as the income does not exceed R$ 706 per person.
- If income decreases again within 36 months, the family can return to the Bolsa Família with priority, without having to go through the CadÚnico queue.
Real Application Example
Imagine a mother with two young children who receives Bolsa Família. In 2025, she gets a formal job and the family’s income increases, slightly exceeding the program’s limit. Before, she would immediately lose the benefit.
-
End of the 6×1 work schedule could expand women’s access to the labor market, says minister, linking a shorter workweek, two days of rest, and combating the overburdening of women to greater dignity and equal pay in the country.
-
Women experience a “7×0 schedule” in care work, dedicating almost 10 more hours per week to home and family, and sustaining an invisible routine that extends across holidays, weekends, and mental health.
-
Tolls on SP-310 and other highways in the interior of São Paulo become more expensive
-
Tech giants laid off 92,000 people in four months to invest in artificial intelligence, and now robots do the work that humans took years to learn.
Now, under the new rule, the family continues receiving at least R$ 600 for up to 1 year, while getting their finances organized. If she loses her job or income drops, she can return to the program without bureaucracy.
Who Can Lose The Benefit Faster
The rule also introduced distinctions. Families that had an increase in income from retirement, pension, or Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC) may remain in the program for only 2 months, as these income sources are considered stable.
Currently, Bolsa Família serves over 21 million families across Brazil. The new protection rule prevents thousands of people from falling back into poverty right after gaining a job or a salary increase.
According to the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, the goal is to ensure a smooth transition between assistance and the labor market, preventing families from refusing jobs due to fear of losing the benefit.
Guaranteed Return: A New Right
Another important advancement is the so-called Guaranteed Return. It ensures that families who return to low income will be able to rejoin the program within 36 months, with priority, without having to go through the entire waiting queue. This rule provides security for those living in unstable occupations, such as informal or temporary jobs.
A Step Against Cyclical Poverty
Bolsa Família was created to reduce extreme poverty, but many beneficiaries faced what is called cyclical poverty: entering and exiting the program repeatedly without stability. With the Protection Rule, the government seeks to provide more predictability for these families, maintaining support during the adjustment phase.
Experts in social policies point out that this measure is a watershed in the fight against inequality, as it creates an incentive for beneficiaries to accept new job opportunities without fear of losing all the program’s supplemental income.
The new Bolsa Família rule in 2025 shows that the program is adapting to the realities of the labor market and family life. With the possibility of maintaining part of the benefit for up to 12 months and the guarantee of return within 36 months, the program gains strength as a continuous protection network, providing more stability and confidence for millions of Brazilians living on the edge of vulnerability.
