In Partnership With SolarCity, Tesla Announces Production of a Solar Roof That Can Revolutionize the Solar Energy Market. The Tesla Solar Roof Promises to Have a Cost Similar to That of a Regular Roof
The new Tesla solar roof promises to revolutionize the solar energy market due to its extremely low price, which can be compared to that of regular shingles that last for 30 years. The project is a partnership between Tesla and SolarCity, a solar panel manufacturer, which was announced in 2017.

The production of the solar roof was supposed to start in mid-2018; however, development and creation were delayed to ensure that all quality objectives were met for buyers. Elon Musk wants the solar roofs to last at least 30 years without needing replacement, along with a cost that aligns with that of a conventional roof.
The Tesla solar roof comes in four variations: Slate, Tuscan, Smooth, and Textured. For now, the solar roofing will only be sold in smooth and textured versions, but it may be expanded later.

Solar Roof at an Affordable Price – Elon Musk Claims
The price of the solar roof was announced in the same year as the partnership, through a post on a social network, where Tesla had already begun the order phase. Despite the delay, when considering the material and labor for the installation and removal of conventional shingles, the total cost of the solar roof would be about US$ 42 per square foot, which in the United States is approximately 0.09 m².
It is worth noting that this price is only for the shingles with integrated solar energy cells, known as active; the inactive ones cost US$ 11. In the case of a residence that uses both types of shingles, Tesla aims to average the price of its solar shingles at US$ 22 per square foot.
As a result, with measure and currency conversions, the cost per square meter would amount to R$ 1,279.56. Each tile is 8.65 centimeters wide and 14 cm long, and Tesla CEO Musk stated that its installation cost will be lower than that of conventional roofs.
Solar Projects Are the Future
In addition to this project by Tesla, in partnership with SolarCity, various others are emerging around the world, all aiming to generate sustainability and always provide clean and sustainable energy. Projects range from photovoltaic parks to solar pavements, such as the case with the Hungarian company Platio, which has created and launched into the market a solar energy pavement for homes capable of generating electricity and returning it to the consumer’s electricity grid.
To meet the annual electricity consumption demand of an average family, only 20 m² of the material is needed. But don’t think that such projects are only developing in countries abroad.
In Brazil, Eternit, which spent about 80 years selling asbestos shingles, is investing in its solar roofing project for the Brazilian market. The company has already received certification from the Inmetro for its project and has already completed four installations of the equipment in the first months of this year.
