Multinational Amazon's new jobs will be for corporate and technology functions around the world in the coming months
In an interview given to the press, the new CEO of Amazon, Andy Jassy said that the multinational is planning to create 55.000 new jobs for corporate and technology functions around the world in the coming months. The executive said the company needed more firepower to keep up with demand in retail, cloud and advertising, among other businesses. And he said the company's new venture to launch satellites into orbit to expand broadband access, called Project Kuiper, would also require a lot of new hires. Contraction to fill Amazon's new jobs
With Amazon's annual job fair set to begin on September 15, Jassy hopes now is a good time to recruit. There are so many jobs during the pandemic that have been shifted or changed, and there are so many people who are thinking about different and new jobs, Jassy said.
Amazon's move follows a period of heightened scrutiny of its labor practices. Earlier this year, a failed effort by some Alabama workers to organize put Amazon's work in fulfillment centers and its aggressive stance against unions in the spotlight. After the battle, Jeff Bezos, the CEO Jassy succeeded, said Amazon needed a better vision for employees.
Changing the demanding work culture of the e-commerce multinational
Asked how he can change Amazon's demanding work culture, Jassy said his strong focus on customers and creativity drives him to improve. Everyone at the company has the freedom – and really, the expectation – to critically look at how this could be better and then come up with ways to make it better, says the executive.
Amazon's marketing positions include engineering, research science and robotics roles, roles that are largely new to the company rather than jobs that others have left, the company said. It was unclear how many of the jobs at Amazon have been open for some time. In 2020, Amazon, the second-largest private employer in the United States, hired more than 500.000 people, mostly in warehouse and delivery operations. This area has seen a significant turnaround.
The company is investing heavily in building more warehouses and raising wages to attract workers to meet strong demand from shoppers looking for products delivered to their homes. Jassy said Amazon has been "very competitive on the clearing side." “We paved the way with the $15 minimum wage,” she said, adding that for some states, on average, “the starting wage is actually $17 an hour.”

Amazon continues to invest in expanding its operations on Brazilian soil. Last Wednesday, the 25th, the e-commerce giant announced its new distribution center in Ceará. The purpose of the investment is to increase Amazon's logistics capacity in Brazil. Amazon has already built six distribution centers in Brazil. Four of them are in the state of São Paulo, while Rio Grande do Sul and Ceará have the rest. The Amazon distribution center is in the city of Itatinga.
It was not disclosed when the company will start operating its new distribution center, however Amazon expects this to happen in the coming months: “The purpose of the new operation is to increase the company's logistical capillarity in Brazil, improving the customer experience , through greater quantity and proximity of products in the region and reducing delivery time nationwide.”
