Cooperative Coamo Announces Construction of New Port in Itapoá, Santa Catarina, Promising to Handle Millions of Tons and Expand Exports.

The governor Jorginho Mello received on this Monday, the 25th, executives from the Cooperative Coamo from Paraná. During the meeting, the eighth port of Santa Catarina was announced to be built in Itapoá.

The expected start of operations is in 2030. The investment will be R$ 3 billion in an area of 43 hectares.

The facility will have three berths and a capacity to handle 11 million tons per year.

The governor highlighted the importance of the project. For him, the venture consolidates the state’s position as a port reference in Brazil.

I have no doubt that it will be a giant step for Santa Catarina. We are going for the eighth port. Just see the size we are and the amount of ports. We are the champions of Brazil. This is music for Santa Catarina,” said Mello.

Additionally, he emphasized that the dredging of Babitonga Bay in São Francisco will help create a new export corridor. “This is a significant achievement for Santa Catarina,” he reinforced.

Reasons for the Choice

Coamo already operates at the Port of Paranaguá in Paraná but faces difficulties.

Constant queues hinder the flow of grains such as soybeans, corn, and wheat produced by 32,000 cooperators.

Thus, the expansion in Santa Catarina emerges as a strategic alternative.

The Executive President of Coamo, Airton Galinari, explained that the business environment in Santa Catarina was decisive for the choice.

He mentioned the increased depth of Babitonga Bay and the duplications of highways SC-416 and SC-417. “This is a dream of our producers. We already have two terminals in Paranaguá, where we handle almost 5 million tons per year,” he stated.

According to Galinari, the project has been in development for almost ten years.

He added that the terminal in Itapoá will have the capacity to handle up to a thousand trucks per day. “This really motivates us to choose Itapoá for this major investment,” he concluded.

Planned Structure

The terminal will feature facilities for different types of cargo. Terminals for LPG, bulk, liquid fuels, and fertilizers are planned.

The estimate is to generate 2,000 jobs during the construction and an additional 1,000 permanent positions when operations begin.

Galinari emphasized that the expansion will enable the cooperative to expand its business. “There are deals that we really can’t do in Paranaguá. This is a different project,” he explained.

Impact on Santa Catarina

The Secretary of Ports, Airports, and Railways, Beto Martins, also commented on the news.

He emphasized that Santa Catarina was already the only state in the country with six ports.

Now, it can say it will have eight. This is because the Bulk Terminal of Santa Catarina, the TGSC, is already in the pre-testing phase.

Martins classified the announcement as very significant. He recalled that Coamo is the largest cooperative in Brazil, with revenues exceeding R$ 30 billion. Furthermore, just in 2023, it recorded exports of US$ 1.9 billion. “This private venture will generate 2,000 jobs during the construction and a thousand direct jobs when it is operational,” he said.

Therefore, the secretary reinforced that the state has a natural vocation for logistics. “This proves that Santa Catarina’s vocation for logistics is, without a doubt, a unique situation throughout Brazil,” he concluded.
