With An Average Production Near 4.9 Million BOE Per Day, Brazil Establishes A New National Record In 2025, Expanding Export Capacity And Accelerating The Oil Account Surplus
Brazil’s oil account reached a historic level in 2025, establishing the country as one of the main players in the global energy market. According to data from ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels), the balance between exports and imports of oil, derivatives, and natural gas reached US$ 29.99 billion last year, the best result ever recorded. This performance represents a growth of 3.57% compared to 2024, when the balance was US$ 28.95 billion.
With the result of 2025, the total of the oil account for the last three years reaches US$ 83.77 billion, also considering the balances of 2024 and 2023, which was US$ 24.83 billion. This amount reflects a significant change in Brazil’s energy balance. In comparison, during the four years of the previous government, the total accumulated was US$ 50.23 billion, meaning that the recent performance represents an increase of 66.8% compared to the previous period.
The remarkable advance of the oil account is directly linked to the strong growth of domestic oil and natural gas production. According to ANP, Brazil set a historical record in 2025, with an average production of 4.897 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, an increase of 13% compared to the previous year. The growth reflects the maturity of the pre-salt fields and the start-up of new production units, especially in the Santos Basin.

Advances In The Oil Account In Recent Years
Now, oil production increased by 12% compared to 2024, reaching an average of 3.770 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, natural gas extraction had an even more impressive growth, at 17%, reaching 179 million cubic meters per day, also a record volume in the historical series. These numbers reinforce the strategic importance of the sector for the Brazilian economy, both in domestic supply and in generating foreign exchange.
Meanwhile, the month of December marked an unprecedented achievement for the national industry. For the first time, daily oil production surpassed the 4 million barrels mark. There were 4.015 million barrels produced per day in the last month of 2025, an increase of 6.4% compared to November and 17% compared to December 2024. This performance consolidated the country in a new productive level and expanded its export capacity.

A large part of this result came from the pre-salt, responsible for about 80% of total national production. During the period, the Tupi, Búzios, and Mero fields accounted for 56% of this volume, confirming the relevance of these areas for the country’s energy strategy.
Meanwhile, post-salt and onshore productions represented, respectively, 15% and 5% of the total, according to information from Valor Econômico. Petrobras, operating alone or in consortium with other companies, maintained its dominant position in the sector, being responsible for approximately 90% of national production.
Throughout 2025, Petrobras put important production units into operation. The platform ships Almirante Tamandaré, in the Búzios field, and Alexandre de Gusmão, in the Mero field, began operations. The state-owned company also started production from the P-78 platform, also in Búzios, on the last day of the year. In addition, the Norwegian company Equinor began production in the Bacalhau field, also located in the Santos Basin, increasing the participation of international companies in the development of the pre-salt.
Main Export Commodity Of The Country
Finally, the accelerated growth of production has made oil the main export commodity for Brazil for the second consecutive year. In 2025, exports from the sector totaled US$ 44.6 billion, equivalent to about R$ 233 billion. This performance was crucial for the oil account to reach nearly US$ 30 billion for the year, according to ANP data, reinforcing the energy sector’s weight in Brazil’s trade balance.
In terms of companies, Petrobras produced, in December, 2.459 million barrels per day of oil, compared to 2.089 million barrels in the same month of 2024. Shell, the second largest producer in the country, also showed growth, with 408.135 thousand barrels per day in December, compared to 387.811 thousand barrels a year earlier. The numbers, reported by outlets such as IstoÉ, O Globo, Valor Econômico, and InfoMoney, confirm the moment of strong expansion for the Brazilian oil industry.
