Conflict Leads Israel to Empty Ports Due to Risk of Fires Hard to Contain in Stored Electric Vehicles.
The conflict between Israel and Iran has caused an unexpected consequence outside the battlefield: the removal of electric cars from the main Israeli ports.
The measure aims to protect facilities from the risks of fires that are difficult to control, should an attack occur on the country’s logistics centers.
Ports Under Threat and Associated Risks
During any war, strategic structures such as power plants, highways, and ports become potential targets.

Haifa port, the most important in Israel and responsible for handling over 22 million tons of cargo per year, has gone on alert.
The same has occurred with Ashdod port, near Tel Aviv, considered the third largest in the country.
According to the specialized portal Maritime Executive, the Israeli Maritime and Port Authority issued an order to vehicle importers: all electric cars must be removed from port areas.
The justification provided is the “need to limit damage” in the event of an attack with missiles. The information was reinforced by the publication Globes, from Israel.
The guidance is not restricted to a single port. Several terminals in the country have been ordered to evacuate electric vehicles and relocate them to safer locations, such as warehouses far from the coast.
Why Have Electric Cars Become a Concern?
The presence of electric vehicles in the ports has been treated as a specific risk. Although these cars present a lower fire risk than combustion models, their batteries require special attention. In cases of overheating, the gases released make fires more difficult to control.
Manufacturers are trying to solve the problem. Some brands are already developing technologies to minimize the risk, such as exhaust systems that regulate the gases emitted when the battery heats up.
Nonetheless, the precautions of Israeli authorities are clear: avoid the accumulation of these vehicles in points considered sensitive.
Additionally, ports concentrate other flammable sources. Even without ships carrying fuels or chemicals, the presence of refueling structures makes these areas vulnerable to large fires. An initial focal point, even if isolated, can easily spread.
Booming Market and Increase in Electric Presence
The alert gained even more strength in light of the rapid growth of the electric fleet in the country. In 2024, sales of electric cars in Israel rose by 27.9%. Currently, one in every five registered vehicles is battery-powered.
Much of this progress comes from Chinese manufacturers, who offer competitively priced models. The BYD brand, for example, already holds a 30.1% market share in Israel.
Xpeng and Zeekr also stand out, occupying the third and sixth positions in sales volume in the country.
In this scenario, the impact of the war directly affects the automotive sector.
The logistics of bringing cars into the country needed to be revised. Thousands of units are being relocated from the ports to points considered safer.
The operation seeks to prevent tragedies, reduce potential losses, and ensure that the electric vehicle market maintains its growth trajectory.
The decision shows how the war between Israel and Iran goes beyond military fronts and is already concretely interfering in the civilian economy.
