The Marina prospect is a large structure bounded by faults, with prospective reservoirs at various levels, from 900 to 2,900 m subsea. The asset has a prospective resource of 256 million barrels of oil and, if successful, could lead to several other prospects in the block, as well as in the technical assessment permit for Area 73, 100% owned by Karoon, to the south. Karoon stated that the well is a critical milestone for assessing the prospect of deeper waters in northern Peru. It is the first well to be drilled in Z-38.

The Stena Forth is a recently delivered robust drillship capable of drilling much deeper waters and handling much harsher maritime conditions than those found in Peru.

Of Karoon’s JV partners in Z-38, Tullow Oil Ltd. holds a 35% stake and Pitkin Petroleum 25% (OGJ Online, May 8, 2019).
