Trucks With Euro 6 Engines Use CK-4 Lubricants That Ensure Viscosity Control, Reducing Emissions and Meeting Environmental Requirements.
Trucks equipped with Euro 6 engines now use CK-4 lubricants, which provide excellent viscosity control. These lubricants are essential for reducing emissions, thus meeting today’s stringent environmental requirements. Furthermore, the innovation brought by these products highlights the industry’s commitment to sustainability.
According to a technical consultant from Mobil™ Lubricants, the use of API-CK4 technology oils is crucial for diesel vehicles to comply with strict limits on pollutant gas emissions. These engine lubricants not only help maintain the vehicles but also play a vital role in preserving the environment. The new generation of products aligns with environmental impact reduction, confirming the importance of innovative fluids in the automotive sector.
Air Quality and Global Warming
The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that 99% of the global population still breathes unhealthy air, according to data published on April 4, 2022. This survey conducted shows how air quality is below recommended levels. This statistic adds to several others that heighten global concern about the phenomenon of global warming and its serious implications for health and the environment. In Brazil alone, a survey by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) revealed that 98% of the population is aware of the urgent need to care for the environment, especially regarding the reduction of pollutant gas emissions.

New Standards for Engine Oils
In this context, the American Petroleum Institute (API) introduced a new category of lubricants on December 1, 2016, establishing strict standards for diesel engine lubricants for four-stroke cycle high-speed engines. This category was created so that trucks, responsible for about 21% of global CO2 emissions, could reduce their carbon footprint by using more efficient and sustainable engine oils and lubricants. The new category, called API CK-4, includes oils that meet rigorous tests and are designed to offer superior performance to the previous category, API CJ-4.
Advantages of CK-4 Lubricants
The Mobil Delvac™ line is an example of CK-4 category lubricants that exceed the specifications required by the API. The lubricants in this line provide 80% better viscosity control at high temperatures, 20% more efficient wear protection, and 50% greater oxidation resistance when compared to the previous API CJ-4 category. These advancements in oil technology result in engines with greater durability and longer oil change intervals, which are fundamental factors for fleet managers seeking cost savings and efficiency.
Sustainability and New Standards
In addition to meeting social and industrial demands, the API CK-4 category oils are formulated to protect and enhance the efficiency of the after-treatment system in Euro 6 engines. These engines, which are part of the diesel fleet compliant with the Vehicle Emission Control Program (Proconve), version P8, limit pollutant emissions and enable the production of more modern and economical engines. The Proconve P8 standards, in effect since 2023, require the use of more advanced lubricants, such as those in the Mobil Delvac™ line.
Development and Advanced Technologies
José Cesário Neto, training and technical support coordinator at Moove, one of the largest producers and distributors of lubricants and base oils in Brazil, emphasized that the new oils developed to meet the latest generation of truck engines are compatible with all components of the after-treatment system, such as the diesel particulate filter (DPF). These engine lubricants are globally identified as Low SAPS, meaning low sulfated ash, low phosphorus, and low sulfur.
The CK-4 specification contains stringent criteria for oil resistance to degradation by oxidation at high temperatures, measured through the Volvo T13 test, a 360-hour test that simulates the ‘aging’ of the oil over more than 80,000 km. This test, developed by Volvo and ExxonMobil, requires that the oil maintain viscosity within the range defined by its SAE grade, such as SAE 15W-40. The goal is to increase oil durability, allowing extended change intervals, thus reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
