The long-awaited works of the port of Macaé (Terpor) have officially begun today, 06/15/2021. The terminal, which is already under construction, promises to inaugurate a new chapter for the development of the Carioca region and to employ over 10,000 new workers, both directly and indirectly.

Mayor of Macaé Talks About the Construction of Terpor

According to Welberth Rezende, Mayor of Macaé, the underwater survey operations for the construction of the port began today (15), and received a multi-million dollar investment, just in this first phase. Rezende was at the dock of the Macaé Yacht Club, and it is from there that the survey platform will head to the ocean.

These operations serve as a foundation for the works that will begin in the coming months. The mayor took the opportunity to deliver the necessary documents for the start of the works.

On-site was also the consultant of the Vale Azul Group and responsible for the Terpor project, José Eduardo Carramenha, along with the secretaries of Economic Development, Rodrigo Viana, and of Energy Policies, Juninho Luna.

The Mayor of Macaé states that the Terpor will be accompanied by a new Natural Gas Processing Unit (UPGN), which will have a capacity of 60 million m3. To put the size of the project into perspective, the largest UPGN in Latin America has a capacity of 25 million m3.

Terpor Works Will Unlock the Job Market in Macaé

Pending since 2020, the Terpor works promise to generate, within a three-year period, about 17,000 new job openings. The port of Macaé will have two port terminals and a unit that processes natural gas, mentioned earlier. In 2019, the project received preliminary environmental licensing, which approved the location and design of the port terminal.

The next step would only be the construction permit for the start of the works. The expected date for Terpor to begin its operations was in 2022. However, since the start of construction only occurred this year, and following this logic, the dates must change to the end of 2023 or 2024.

Terpor Will Have 6 Million Square Meters

Covering a land area of 6,000,000 m2, the port will have storage yards and bonded warehouses. Terminal A consists of a liquid terminal and offshore support, and will be connected to land by a bridge of about 4 km, with a depth of 16.5 meters.

Terminal B will be used for oil handling and has two berths, with a depth of around 27 meters, to accommodate VLCC ships. Furthermore, the terminal will have a capacity to handle up to 2 million barrels per day.
