thyssenkrupp Uhde Collaborates with ENOWA in Saudi Arabia, Integrating Technology Leadership in Sustainable Fuel and Chemical Production.
The Union That Transforms: thyssenkrupp Uhde and ENOWA
thyssenkrupp Uhde has solidified its position in the clean energy landscape by partnering with ENOWA, the energy reference of the ambitious NEOM project in Saudi Arabia. Both are committed to creating a cutting-edge facility for converting CO2 into methanol and subsequently producing gasoline, located at ENOWA’s Hydrogen Innovation and Development Center. Utilizing the innovative uhde green methanol® process and ExxonMobil’s advanced technique for converting methanol into gasoline, the project aims for a daily production of 12 tons of methanol and 35 barrels of gasoline.
Potential of Green Methanol
The methanol resulting from this process, derived from the combination of hydrogen and carbon dioxide, has vast and impactful applications. It serves as an energy carrier, hydrogen carrier, direct fuel for transportation, and also as a renewable energy storage solution. Furthermore, its versatility spans diverse industrial sectors, including the production of biodiesel, bleaching agents, plastics, paints, building materials, and even pharmaceuticals.
“The project is a game changer in the fight against climate change and highlights the importance of the uhde green methanol® process for a sustainable future,” says Guido Daniel, from the Petrochemical & Polymers Operational Unit.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.

Africa has about 500,000 cell towers and most still burn diesel to operate, while companies rush to cover antennas with solar energy and avoid signal blackouts.

Farmers swapped diesel for solar panels in Pakistan, powered irrigation pumps almost cost-free, expanded rice fields, and now groundwater has become a red alert in the countryside.
Leadership in Innovation and Sustainability
The innovative design of uhde green methanol® enables efficient and scalable production, catering to both small local markets and massive global demands. This technology, by facilitating the transition from fossil to renewable energy sources and applying captured CO2 in production, is crucial for minimizing harmful emissions.
ENOWA, in turn, is a giant in energy and water, emerging from NEOM, dedicated to providing clean solutions for industrial and commercial applications. Its commitment to renewable energy and water efficiency aims to set a global standard for sustainable circular economic systems.
About NEOM
