We Explore ABM’s Initiatives That Drive Innovation And Safety In The Sector.
In September 2023, the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Materials and Mining (ABM) held an important congress in São Paulo, bringing together an elite group of experts and leaders in the sector. This annual event stood out for fostering incisive discussions and significant advancements in the metallurgy and mining industry. The ABM, recognized for its ability to gather great minds, continues to be a beacon of knowledge exchange and technological advancement. During the last meeting, the creation of strategies to tackle complex challenges in the areas of materials and mining was intense and productive.
At the event, a new phase of cooperation between companies began, aiming to raise safety standards across all sector activities. This collective approach not only redefines efficiency but also fosters large-scale innovation. The decisive partnership between several corporations, established in 2022, has already begun to show visible results with increased safety and innovation in everyday operations. In March 2023, a study indicated that these collaborations resulted in a 20% increase in production efficiency. This performance highlights the positive impact of ABM’s actions in recent years.
Collaborations And Advances In Safety
Since the first half of 2022, the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Materials and Mining has prioritized safety, recognizing its vital importance to the sector. With the goal of implementing a uniform safety standard, quarterly workshops were established where successful practices are shared among the involved companies. The success of these workshops, proven by a 15% increase in safety operations by December 2023, reinforces ABM’s relentless commitment to excellence.

Bottle caps and pine sawdust replace discarded wood in concrete molds, reduce waste, reuse household residues, and create sustainable solutions in Brazilian construction projects.
ABM also promotes global events that highlight continuous efficiency and innovation in the industry. In June 2023, during the International Forum on Technology and Innovation held in Rio de Janeiro, a new technology was presented that promises to revolutionize the mining process by reducing environmental impact. This technological innovation is a testament to ABM’s ongoing pursuit of a sustainable and profitable future.
With its vast network of collaboration, ABM not only facilitates technological progress but also encourages sustainable practices that align with contemporary environmental demands. The combination of diverse visions and established knowledge positions ABM as a fundamental pillar in the sector’s development.

Promotion Of Exchange In Latin America
The Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Materials and Mining (ABM) reaffirms its role as the main facilitator of technical exchange in Latin America. Bringing together experts and leaders from the steel sector, ABM organizes events aimed at enhancing the safety standard, efficiency and innovation in the industry. The Latin America Experts is one of the initiatives promoted by ABM, gathering specialists from various steel mills in the region. The goal is to foster a collaborative ecosystem where professionals have the opportunity to share best practices, analyze performance indicators (KPIs), and discuss critical issues regarding health and safety management and strategic solutions currently challenging the industry.
Collaborative Environment And Strategic Discussions
These meetings hosted by ABM highlight the importance of maintaining confidentiality, focusing exclusively on technical aspects and avoiding commercial debates or discussions on specific know-how. This ensures a favorable environment for open and participative exchange. According to Valdomiro Roman da Silva, Operations Director at ABM, the events in 2024 marked a turning point for the program, involving 13 steel units from Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. Among the notable meetings are the 10th Hot Rolling Specialists Meeting in Ipatinga/MG, the 4th Cold Rolling Meeting in Joinville/SC, and the 1st Energy and Utilities Specialists Meeting in Ouro Branco/MG.
Participation Of Specialists And Sector Development
The event in Ipatinga, hosted by Usiminas, included 46 specialists. In Joinville, supported by ArcelorMittal VEGA, there were 47 professionals in attendance, while in Ouro Branco, at the Gerdau unit, 16 participants debated industrial utilities management and strategies for energy transition and decarbonization. These specialist meetings are crucial for exchanging best practices in health and safety, as well as promoting the exchange of operational results and relevant technical indicators for the sector. This collaborative environment expands networking opportunities, generating valuable insights that benefit not only individual organizations but also strengthen the competitiveness of the steel industry regionally and in the countries where they are located, as stated by Márcio Silva, technical support manager at ABM.
Advances And Future Of ABM
Over the years, the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Materials and Mining has solidified its influence, promoting best practices in the steel industry. The meetings provide continuous learning opportunities, allowing companies to share innovative solutions and strengthen Latin America’s competitiveness on the global stage. For 2025, ABM plans to intensify this trajectory, expanding the program to include Long Products Rolling, which has not yet held meetings, and Reduction and Steelmaking processes. These processes already have meetings organized by representatives from the companies themselves, but ABM aims to ensure greater control over data confidentiality and ensure compliance in information exchange, adds Márcio Silva.
