The Petrobras Offshore Wind Pilot Plant Project Was Associated with the Ubarana Field in Rio Grande do Norte
Petrobras has decided to suspend the pilot project for offshore wind energy generation at the Ubarana Field, located in the Potiguar Basin, along the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. Petrobras Initiates the Sale of Petrobras Biocombustível.

The state’s offshore wind project would be built about 20 km from the coast of Guamaré, at the Ubarana Field. However, the plant went into hibernation at the end of March, along with other shallow-water assets in the Northeast and the Campos Basin.
The pilot project would implement a tower and a wind turbine, as well as other equipment to measure the potential for wind energy generation offshore. The project would be located 20 km off the coast of Guamaré, with a water depth (LDA) of 12 to 16 meters.
According to Viviana, the demonstration plant in the Northeast lost its relevance in the region “at the moment we made the strategic decision to focus our upstream assets in the Southeast.” The offshore wind project would be integrated into the Ubarana asset.
Despite the news, Viviana stated that Petrobras remains interested in the activity, and in the future, the state company may become “a world-class player” in offshore wind.
The company has opted to exit the renewable energy sectors, both by suspending the aforementioned project and also in the biofuels sector.
In the last month, the state company began the binding phase of the divestment process in Eólica Mangue Seco 3 and Eólica Mangue Seco 4, owners of wind power generation plants in Guamaré.
Liquefaction Units Offshore
Petrobras is considering installing liquefaction units offshore to handle the increasing production of natural gas from the pre-salt, said the manager of Emissions and Climate Change, Viviana Coelho, in a webinar on Friday.
According to her, the LNG units could be an alternative for natural gas associated with oil production from the pre-salt.
It was not clear if the program has a schedule. Currently, Petrobras relies on offshore pipelines to transport natural gas to the coast, where it is processed.
Regarding the Sale of Refineries by Petrobras Questioned by the Federal Congress
Regarding the Congress’s Manifestation to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Against the Sale Model of the State Refineries, Petrobras’s Institutional Relations Executive Director, Roberto Ardenghy, stated that Petrobras will provide clarifications when questioned. According to the executive, the sale process is proceeding as normal.
