Project Aims to Modernize Infrastructure and Meet Growing Demand of the Parintins Festival and Cruise Tourism in the Amazon

The Port of Parintins, located in Amazonas, will enter a new phase of modernization in the coming months. The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) announced, on March 30, 2025, that the floating dock will be extended from 150 to 250 meters.

With this expansion, the government seeks to modernize the port infrastructure. In addition, it aims to accommodate the growing flow of passengers during the famous Parintins Festival, which takes place at the end of June.

On the other hand, the project also prepares the port for the busy cruise season, which occurs annually between September and March.

First Phase of the Works Has Already Been Completed

The technical team from Dnit completed the first phase of the project in early June 2025. The work included the replacement of the floating walkways, as well as the modernization of the anchoring structures.

During the work, Dnit temporarily suspended activities at the port. This ensured total safety during the execution of the services.

Edmit Tavares, director of waterway infrastructure at Dnit, stated: “From the beginning, our priority was to ensure the safety of revelers and tourists“.

Second Phase Will Bring Expansion and More Safety

The new phase of construction will begin soon. Dnit will install side coverings on the walkway and the floating terminal.

In addition, two new modules of 50 meters will expand the floating dock. The structure will now have 250 meters of extension.

As a result, the port will be able to receive large vessels with more safety and comfort.

Additionally, Dnit will implement marking buoys. These buoys will guide the approach of vessels and ensure safe and efficient anchorage.

Impact on the Parintins Festival and Local Tourism

The Parintins Festival attracts around seven thousand passengers per day with each edition. That is, this volume exceeds three times the normal flow of the port.

For this reason, the expansion of the dock is essential to accommodate the growing audience. Furthermore, it will consistently improve the city’s tourism infrastructure.

Dnit assured that, with the advancement of the works, everything will be completed in time for the next Parintins Festival, scheduled for the end of June 2025.

Preparation for the High Cruise Season

In addition to the festival, the Port of Parintins is preparing to receive large cruises between September 2025 and March 2026.

This investment, in turn, is part of a strategic plan. The goal is to position the Amazon as a competitive and sustainable tourist destination.

Thus, the government seeks to boost the local economy. However, it intends to respect the environment and preserve regional culture.

What Does the Future Hold for the Port of Parintins?

After the project’s completion, the port will have ideal conditions to receive more tourists and vessels.

However, authorities will need to ensure the maintenance of the infrastructure. Additionally, they must organize the flow of passengers.

In this way, tourism development can occur in a balanced and sustainable manner.

And what about you? Do you think the region should accelerate tourism or adopt gradual growth to protect the Amazon?
