Ports RS Predicts R$ 60 Million in Investments by 2025 for Dredging and Modernization of Gaucho Waterways, Including Works at the Port of Rio Grande and Porto Alegre.
Portos RS has initiated a large dredging program in the hydrographic channels of Rio Grande do Sul, with a predicted investment of R$ 60 million by the end of 2025. The action aims to restore the depth and navigability of critical stretches, heavily impacted by the floods of the previous year.
The financing comes from the Fund Pacto pelo Rio Grande (Funrigs), which totals R$ 731.4 million and enables essential works for state logistics. The dredging works are being conducted in phases, according to findings from bathymetric surveys, prioritizing critical points in the channels.
Five Channels Already in Recovery and Special Attention to the Port of Rio Grande
Currently, the channels of Itapuã, Pedras Brancas, Feitoria, Leitão, and Furadinho are in the recovery process.

With a length of 225 meters and a capacity of 76 thousand tons, this ship “sinks” its own deck down to 28 meters deep to accommodate war destroyers, oil platforms, and giant radars floating above, and then emerges with everything intact on top like a colossal tray crossing oceans.

A 100-meter platform without a motor, without a keel, and operating upside down rotates 90 degrees in the ocean, sinks 75 meters, and drifts around Antarctica for two years driven by the planet’s most powerful current to study the largest carbon sink on Earth, still poorly understood by science for accurate climate modeling.

With a length of 108 meters and a giant spoon shape, the FLIP was the only ship in the world capable of rotating 90 degrees in the ocean and remaining vertical, with 91 meters submerged, operating for 60 years until it was retired and sent to the scrapyard in 2023.
The dredging of the access channel to the Port of Rio Grande is expected to begin in the second half of the year.
This stretch, strategic for foreign trade, is expected to absorb 60% of the total resources allocated to the program.
The works will continue until November, with a scheduled interruption due to environmental requirements in the estuary.
Continuity is planned for March 2026, concentrating most of the investments in the next year.
Restructuring of the Port of Porto Alegre and New Auctions for Port Areas
While the Port of Rio Grande set a record for movement in the 1st quarter, with nearly 10 million tons, the Port of Porto Alegre registered a decline of 81%, reflecting the flooding that affected the state.
To reverse this scenario, Portos RS plans R$ 40 million for the restructuring of local infrastructure.
Among the strategies is the resumption of the auction for the POA26 area, close to the Grêmio Arena.
The notice plans an investment of R$ 21.1 million over 10 years, aimed at the storage and movement of bulk solids.
Other leases are planned at the Port of Rio Grande, such as:
- RIG23 – area currently operated by Petrobras
- RIG28 – for a new liquid terminal
- RIG40 – aimed at the chemical sector
Investments in Technology and Sustainability in Gaucho Ports
In addition to the resources from Funrigs, another R$ 16 million is being applied this year in modernization actions, with a focus on the Port of Rio Grande. The initiatives include:
- Paving and internal signaling of the port area
- Adoption of decarbonization practices
- Implementation of the VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) system, which uses artificial intelligence for monitoring and identification of vessels, increasing safety and operational efficiency.
