Viral Xenophobic Speech in Portugal: Brazilian Worth €500 in Video That Outraged Half a Million Immigrants
A video published on social media sparked outrage among the Brazilian community in Portugal, estimated to be about 550 thousand people. In the footage, a Portuguese man promises to pay € 500 (approximately R$ 3.1 thousand) to anyone who brings him the “head of a Brazilian,” in a violent and xenophobic speech that quickly resonated.
The hateful remarks were interpreted by social leaders as incitement to violence against immigrants, especially against Brazilians, who make up the largest foreign community in the European country. In response to public pressure, the baker where the video’s author worked announced his dismissal, emphasizing that it does not condone racist or discriminatory practices.
Repercussions and Formal Complaints
The case prompted an immediate reaction from organizations focused on defending immigrants. Sônia Gomes, founder of the Association for Supporting Emigrants, Immigrants, and Families (AAEIF), confirmed that she will formalize a criminal complaint against the man.

“Messing with Brazilians? Is he going crazy? Not here. Zero tolerance,” she stated.
Similarly, Juliet Cristino, from the Committee of Immigrants in Portugal (CIP), demanded swift action from the authorities:
“Who wouldn’t be outraged by this? The police need to act because it’s a crime and discrimination. This type of speech only increases violence and then they still try to blame the immigrants.”
Reaction from the House of Brazil in Lisbon
The president of the House of Brazil in Lisbon, Ana Paula Costa, classified the incident as “the most perverse, violent, and criminal expression of anti-immigration rhetoric, racism, and xenophobia.” The organization stressed that the case needs a thorough investigation to ensure it does not go unpunished.
Dismissal and Public Opinion Pressure
The backlash was so intense that the employer of the accused decided to dismiss him immediately. In a statement, the bakery informed:
“We want to make it clear that the person involved in the videos is no longer part of our team. We do not accept or condone any form of racism.”
The decision was praised by human rights defense organizations, which considered the measure a necessary step given the gravity of the situation. Still, Brazilians residing in Portugal are demanding firm action from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, calling for an investigation to ascertain the crime of incitement to violence and discrimination.
