President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) discarded adopting retaliatory measures against the United States, after the increase of American tariffs to 50% on a series of Brazilian products. The statement was made during an interview with the Reuters agency, published on Wednesday (6), one day after the measure came into effect.
“I could announce a tax on American products. [But] I won’t do it, because I don’t want to have the same behavior as him (Donald Trump)“, said the president. According to Lula, the priority will be to implement actions aimed at the sectors of the economy directly affected, such as exporters and industrial workers.
Still during the interview, Lula emphasized the importance of avoiding diplomatic confrontations with the U.S. “I want to show that when one does not want, two do not fight. And I do not want to fight with the United States”, he declared. The decision comes in a context of global trade tension, with countries reviewing bilateral agreements and adopting protectionist policies.
The information was initially released by the Reuters agency and echoed by outlets such as CNN Brasil and Folha de S.Paulo, which highlighted the government’s strategy not to escalate the conflict and preserve dialogue with the White House.
