Xiaomi’s First Electric Car Leaked on Chinese Social Media. The Model Features an Impressive Design and is Expected to Deliver Above-Average Performance.
In China, keeping new developments a secret is quite challenging for most companies, considering that the country’s social media often reveal some secrets well ahead of the desired time. The most recent leak occurred on Weibo, a well-known social network in China, where real images of the first electric car from Xiaomi appeared.
Xiaomi’s First Electric Car Will Be a Sedan
Photos of a real prototype of the model, called Xiaomi MS11, were shared without any camouflage paint by a user of the microblog, revealing a bit more about the model’s design, which had already been seen in disguised tests. From the images, it is noticeable that Xiaomi’s first electric car is a sedan.

According to information, the model is very similar to the Seal from BYD, one of the largest electric car brands in China. Its headlights are quite reminiscent of those of the McLaren 720S, and the taillights resemble those of Aston Martin vehicles.

The unit appearing in the leaked photos features a panoramic glass roof, large wheels with Brembo brakes, and the classic logo of the Chinese smartphone giant in the center of the rims.
Just above the windshield, it seems that the manufacturer added a sort of sensor, probably a Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar), intended to detect objects, measure their movement and distance.
Multinational Xiaomi Will Produce Its Own Motor
According to reports, the Xiaomi electric car will be equipped with a battery set provided by CATL and also by the BYD manufacturer itself. The electric motor of the vehicle will be created by the smartphone manufacturer itself.
The name of the vehicle has not yet been officially defined, but the expectation is that it will be “Modena.” To make its strong debut in the electric vehicle market and attract more customers, the brand did not take many risks with the design: it aims to focus more on the experience.
What could make a real difference are the integrated technologies and the performance of the vehicle. We will learn more about these car features when the manufacturer releases images of the interior. The MS11 will launch in China in the first quarter of 2024. It is important to mention that Xiaomi Automobille, the automotive arm of Xiaomi, was founded in 2021. The company’s goal is to produce its cars without relying on contracts with third parties.
Xiaomi Begins Construction of Its Second Electric Car Factory in China
According to sources within the company, highlighted by Reuters, the smartphone giant finalized the process to build a second electric car factory in Shanghai last May.
The automotive division of the company is gathering a range of suppliers to construct the production unit. Additionally, the company is also searching for a series of other suppliers located in Shanghai.
At the time, Xiaomi Auto Technology had only one factory operating in China’s capital, Beijing. This facility is being established to conduct assembly tests. However, Xiaomi knew that the demand for electric cars is high and that assembly capacity is low, so the construction of another unit in Shanghai could alleviate this bottleneck.
It is important to mention that the city where the unit will be installed is one of the most competitive in China for the electric car sector because it has a large capacity of installed factories, parts suppliers, and also a privileged maritime transport for export. At the same time, Xiaomi revealed that it will make an investment of about 10 billion dollars in its new division.
