Green Industrial Activity Is a Priority for the Brazilian Government, Says Tatiana Prazeres, Secretary of Foreign Trade. Sustainable Development and Reducing Pollutant Gas Emissions Are Key Issues in Foreign Trade. Brazil and the United Kingdom Reach R$ 70 Billion in 2024 in Goods and Services. Ecological Transition and International Partnership Are Fundamental for a Sustainable Industrial Strategy.
The green industrial activity has become a highlighted priority of the Brazilian government, according to statements from the Secretary of Foreign Trade, Tatiana Prazeres. The country has used its prominent position in the G20 to address challenging topics among nations, focusing on sustainable development and reducing pollutant gas emissions, mainly within the scope of foreign trade and investments.
Brazil and the United Kingdom reached the mark of R$ 70 billion in goods and services in 2024, demonstrating the relevance of strong bilateral trade relations. The ecological transition and international partnerships are crucial for a sustainable industrial strategy, highlighting the importance of international trade in promoting and adopting ecological practices. The pursuit of a greener economy is an essential element in foreign trade policies, reinforcing Brazil’s commitment to a more sustainable future.
According to Tatiana Prazeres, the Secretary of Foreign Trade of Brazil, the target set by the Brazilian government aims to strengthen the industrial activity. ‘Our intention is to encourage an innovative, sustainable, and also export-oriented industry. For our exports to work, we also need to ensure the import of inputs and technologies. This reflects our vision of a global and integrated economy’.

Importance of Trade Relations with the United Kingdom
The trade interaction with the United Kingdom is extremely relevant. Without this perspective, we will not be able to advance towards a more modern and globally competitive industry, especially regarding foreign trade. Tatiana Prazeres, who in addition to her roles in the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services of Brazil also leads the Working Group on Trade and Investments of the G20 in Brazil, emphasized this during a meeting with members of the British Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Brazil (Britcham).
She highlighted the importance of a strategic vision focused on bilateral negotiations and foreign interest in Brazilian goods and services, always with an emphasis on sustainable development. ‘The relationship between trade and sustainable development is permanent. We need to see the economic impact and trade relations beyond mere trade in goods’, she stated.
Trade in Services and Exporting Industry
British investments in Brazil are significant, with approximately 700 UK companies operating in the country. The trade in goods has shown growth, but the trade in services, essential for the British economy and for integration with the Brazilian economy, also offers ample earning opportunities for both sides. A historic milestone was reached in 2024, when bilateral trade between Brazil and the United Kingdom surpassed R$ 70 billion in goods and services, an increase of about 17% compared to the previous year.
In this process of advancing foreign trade between the two countries, the British government aligns with Brazil’s sustainable goals. According to Sarah Clegg, the British Consul-General in São Paulo, ‘all of our ministries are committed to this issue. To promote this mission, we are developing a new industrial strategy that will aim for sustainable, inclusive, and secure economic growth. This goal resembles our ecological transition‘.
Ecological Transition and Environmental Responsibility
However, Clegg acknowledged that such objectives cannot be achieved without solid international partnerships, which is why the strategy will be international from the outset. Renata Sucupira, president of the International Trade & Investments Committee of Britcham, agrees that the growing demand for sustainable solutions and innovative technologies reaffirms the importance of environmental responsibility.
This drive encompasses themes such as circular economy, green subsidies, and low-carbon agriculture. Britcham, with its 108 years of operation in Brazil, is the only chamber of commerce recognized by both the Brazilian and British governments, operating through offices in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, and Minas Gerais. The non-profit organization aims to foster trade relations between Brazil and the United Kingdom, promote discussions on the business environment, and create new opportunities for the business communities of both countries, with a keen eye on international trade and bilateral relations.
