Half Price on Food. This is the commitment of an initiative by the municipality of São Paulo, which will provide products much more accessible to low-income families living in the capital.

The announcement of this information took place on Wednesday (31) by the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, during the inauguration of the Municipal Market of São Miguel Paulista, located in the Eastern Zone of the capital.

Solidarity Store

Called the Solidarity Store of the capital, the initiative is considered pioneering, as it will sell products at prices up to 50% lower than those practiced in general commerce. Some prices may even exceed this percentage.

According to information released by the press office of the São Paulo municipality, the initiative aims to benefit people in situations of social vulnerability who are currently registered in the CadÚnico.

In the Solidarity Store of the capital, the service capacity reaches one thousand people per day. There, a kilogram of potatoes costs R$ 3.99, a significantly lower amount than the average of R$ 12.99 currently practiced in the markets of São Paulo.

Despite the much lower price, during a press conference, the mayor of São Paulo emphasized that the intention is not to compete with markets, which are responsible for generating income and jobs. “Markets generate jobs and income. The intention is to offer cheaper food for more vulnerable people, for those registered in CadÚnico”, stated the mayor of the capital.

On the same occasion, the mayor of São Paulo highlighted other foods that are commonly found on Brazilian tables and that, in the Solidarity Store, will be sold at much lower prices than in conventional markets:

  • Beans: R$ 6.99 / R$ 9.39;
  • Coffee: R$ 9.80 / R$ 15.19;
  • Camil Rice: R$ 21.90 / R$ 32.

In addition to the Solidarity Store unit launched this week, the municipality plans to create seven more in the capital. According to the São Paulo administration, the focus is to combat food insecurity in the city and promote healthier habits, as this initiative offers natural, organic, and minimally processed foods.

Who Finances the Program

The Solidarity Store program, according to the municipal secretary of Human Rights and Citizenship, Soninha Francine, is financed by the Food Supply Fund of São Paulo (FAASP).

She mentioned that, for the adaptation of the space in the Municipal Market of São Miguel Paulista, an investment of nearly R$ 500 thousand was necessary, and the National Institute of Technology, Education, Culture, and Health (INTECS), responsible for managing the Store, will receive a monthly allocation of R$ 2.3 million.

The amount paid by the population for the products will be reverted to the FAASP. “The concept is that people can buy what they want and, more importantly, that they can choose, to have the dignity of choice”, she said, adding that “combating hunger for those who need it most, that is the concept of the store”.

Operation of the Site

The Municipal Market of São Miguel Paulista, located at Avenida Marechal Tito, 567, operates from 9 AM to 6 PM. The unit houses 75 vendors who sell fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, household goods, and other products.

Other Programs of the Municipality of São Paulo

In addition to the Solidarity Store, the Municipality of São Paulo maintains other programs aimed at low-income populations, such as the Food and Nutritional Security programs, School Kitchen Network, Citizen Kitchen Network, Solidarity City, Food Bank, and units of the Paulistano Good Plate.
