Proposal Aims at Implementing an Offshore Wind Farm in Rio Grande do Norte, Covering 300 Km² with 52 Wind Turbines of 12 MW Installed Capacity, Plus Two Substations
The offshore wind energy park construction project in Rio Grande do Norte is getting closer to starting! BI Energia presented details of the proposal’s scope to the State Government in a virtual meeting held last Thursday (03), and it was established that the Memorandum of Understanding will be signed among the stakeholders within two weeks.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.

Migrant workers left the world’s largest renewable energy park in India after extreme heat, 12-hour shifts, delayed wages, and poor accommodations at a site that still promises to supply 18 million homes.
According to engineer and company representative Lúcio Bomfim, to start the offshore wind farm’s construction, two to three years will be necessary, depending on the approval from Ibama, terms of reference, public hearings with communities, and executive project.
The project aims to implement a wind farm offshore of Touros, São Miguel do Gostoso, and Pedra Grande, cities in Rio Grande do Norte, covering 300 Km² with 52 wind turbines of 12 MW installed capacity, totaling 624 MW, plus two substations. According to Bi Energia, it is estimated that 3.1 thousand GWh/year will be generated.
Wind Potential of Rio Grande do Norte
Rio Grande do Norte is one of the states in the Northeast with the highest potential to host wind energy projects in the country. Currently, RN has 164 plants operating, 19 under construction, and another 84 contracted projects, where construction has not yet begun and has an installed capacity for generating 4,450 MW of energy.
According to the state’s governor, Fátima Bezerra, RN has been increasing its capacity, including through partnerships and investments like those from Bi Energia, and continues to lead the ranking of wind production in Brazil.
About Bi Energia
BI Energia is a Special Purpose Company (SPE) designed for constructing Brazil’s first offshore wind farm. The company is part of the BI Holding Participações e Investimentos group, which focuses on energy production and generation.
The BI Energia project is located in Caucaia-CE, between the ports of Pecém and Mucuripe, and is designed to supply approximately 25% of the state’s energy needs. This experience with projects in Ceará has accelerated offshore wind projects in Rio Grande do Norte.
