Biopar, That Serves Santana de Parnaíba and Barueri, Carries Out Mechanized Sorting of Urban Waste, Separating Recyclables and Enabling the Revaluation of Steel Cans
The Prolata, a non-profit association created by ABEAÇO (Brazilian Association of Steel Packaging), partners with Biopar, a company that manages the mechanized collection of urban solid waste, serving the municipalities of Santana de Parnaíba and Barueri in the São Paulo metropolitan area. The goal of the partnership is to intensify reverse logistics in these municipalities, facilitating the sorting of solid waste from residences served by Biopar until it is forwarded for revaluation by Prolata.
The first partner of Prolata that works with mechanized management, the Biopar uses 100% national technology and sorts more than 187 thousand tons of waste per year. Thais Fagury, executive director of Prolata, explains that one of the biggest advantages of the partnership is the ability to segregate material that comes directly from the end consumer and would be difficult to account for and allocate for revaluation.
“Having the certainty that the cans come from the end consumer is one of the major positives, as it is a volume we would not have control over without the partnership. While the Prolata cooperatives already receive material from selective collection, Biopar will segregate larger volumes of waste that had not yet been separated, which is very important to intensify the reverse logistics system,” comments Thais.

The correct disposal of waste prevents soil contamination and avoids the accumulation of garbage in landfills, one of the biggest urban environmental problems today.
Created in 2012 by Brazilian Association of Steel Packaging (Abeaço), Prolata aims to ensure that post-consumer steel cans are disposed of correctly by consumers and revaluated in steel mills, turning them into new cans or other items that use steel as raw material.
