Find Out How Much It May Cost to Get Your Driver’s License with the New Contran Rules. See Fee Amounts, Changes in the Process, Impact on the Final Price, and How the Removal of Mandatory Classes May Lower the Cost of Licensing in Brazil.
A national change in the licensing process is beginning to alter the cost of obtaining a driver’s license in Brazil. Contran has approved new rules that come into effect nationwide and modify what is mandatory, when each stage must be completed, how the candidate can learn, and why the government decided to relax driver training.
The main impact is already clear: the costs of the driver’s license are now distributed differently, which reduces expenses for many Brazilians.
This raises the principal question immediately: what will be the new cost of the first driver’s license?
-
Airfare prices may rise with increasing fuel costs, and the government is considering urgent measures to avoid a direct impact on the wallets of Brazilians.
-
Chocolate prices soar nearly 15% and become a luxury item for Easter 2026, with increases surpassing inflation and changes in Brazilian consumption habits.
-
The Federal Revenue issues a good alert for Brazilian taxpayers: 60.9% are already using the pre-filled tax return, automatic refunds via Pix reach millions, and the government plans for a fully automated income tax in the coming years.

India announces a plan of $3.06 billion to bring aviation to forgotten regions: 100 new airports, $1.07 billion in subsidies, and regional routes guaranteed for 10 years, from 2026 to 2036, away from the centers.
How Much Does It Cost to Get a Driver’s License in Brazil: Amount Can Reach R$ 5,000, Says Government
According to estimates from the federal government, the driver’s license can cost up to R$ 5,000 in some states — especially when the candidate chooses paid lessons, even without a requirement.
This amount, however, is expected to change, as the old cost structure ceases to exist.
Mandatory Fees Remain: See How Much Is Paid in Minas Gerais
Even with changes in the learning process, the fees from Detran remain and constitute a fixed part of the cost of obtaining the driver’s license.
In Minas Gerais, they total R$ 858.53, but are now distributed across different stages:
- R$ 221.85 for the psychological exam
- R$ 110.62 for the practical test
- R$ 82.97 for the learning license
- R$ 110.62 for the opening of the licensing process
- R$ 221.85 for the medical exam
- R$ 110.62 for the legislation test
These amounts remain mandatory because they are part of the evaluations that certify the candidate.
Driving Schools Were Responsible for the Largest Part of the Cost Before the New Rules
Before the changes made by Contran, a significant portion of the cost of the driver’s license came from packages offered by driving schools.
A survey from Mercado Mineiro, conducted in August of this year, showed that the final price charged in Belo Horizonte ranged between R$ 2,255.99 and R$ 2,915.
The courses included:
- R$ 322.11 for the 45 hours of theoretical classes
- R$ 1,426 for the 20 hours of driving
- the remainder allocated to internal fees of the institutions
In practice, practical classes represented 63.2% of the entire value of the package and were the most expensive element of the process.
New Driver’s License Rules: What Changes in Costs
With the changes approved by Contran:
- the theoretical classes are no longer paid and become free and online through the Ministry of Transport;
- practical classes also cease to be mandatory, allowing the candidate to train with a private instructor or licensed mentor;
- driving schools are no longer the only intermediaries, becoming optional.
In other words, how much it costs to get a driver’s license now depends more on the choices of the candidate rather than the requirements of the process.
How Much Should the Driver’s License Cost Going Forward? See Possible Scenarios
Candidate Who Does Not Take Lessons
Only pays the mandatory fees — about R$ 858.53 in Minas.
Candidate Who Chooses Some Practical Lessons
Has variable prices, as driving schools may offer smaller and more flexible packages.
States with Higher Costs
Where the fee structure is higher, the total amount may approach R$ 5,000 mentioned by the government.
What Remains Mandatory in the Licensing Process?
Even with the relaxation, it is still necessary to:
- take medical exams
- undergo psychological evaluation
- pass the theoretical test
- take the practical test
- pay all fees listed by Detran
The process becomes more accessible, but not less demanding.
The Cost of Obtaining a Driver’s License Will Depend Much More on the Candidate
With free classes and the possibility of waiving mandatory practical training, many Brazilians will be able to save money.
On the other hand, those who prefer professional instruction will still have that option.
The change makes the process more democratic and adjustable to the financial situation of each candidate — and, consequently, completely alters how much it costs to get a driver’s license in Brazil.
