A military model developed in Brazil is attracting worldwide attention for its power, innovation and versatility. Embraer's cargo plane is approaching new strategic markets and could transform the global defense aviation scenario with its surprising technology.
Brazil gains prominence in the global defense scenario with the KC-390 military cargo plane, from Embraer, which is advancing in negotiations to join the South African fleet.
The agreement between the Brazilian manufacturer and the South African company Denel, signed during LAAD Defence & Security 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, marks another strategic step towards the international expansion of the multi-mission aircraft.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed last Friday (4), provides for robust industrial collaboration between the two companies.

The partnership aims to promote technology transfer, encourage the manufacture of aerostructures and strengthen maintenance, repair and overhaul services for the KC-390 on the African continent.
According to Embraer, this alliance with Denel reinforces the intention to position the KC-390 as a complete solution for countries seeking to modernize their air forces.
South Africa currently faces operational challenges with an aging fleet and is seeking efficient and cost-effective alternatives to replace its military transport aircraft.
International expansion of the KC-390
Since it entered into operation by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) in 2019, the KC-390 has attracted the attention of armed forces around the world.
The aircraft is already in service in Portugal and Hungary and has been purchased by at least eight countries, including one nation whose name has not yet been released.
We also pack any Sweden and Slovakia selected the Brazilian freighter to renew their fleets, consolidating confidence in the model developed by Embraer.
This growing international support places Brazil in a leading position in the aerospace and defense sector.
With the signing of the agreement with Denel, South Africa could become the first African country to operate the KC-390, which would open up a new market for the aircraft on the continent.
Experts point out that this movement may encourage other African nations to consider the Brazilian model as a viable alternative to meet different logistical and operational demands.
A versatile giant prepared for complex missions
The KC-390 Millenium stands out for its versatility, range and operational capacity.
With a cruising speed of over 900 km/h and a flight range that can exceed 6.000 km with extra tanks, the aircraft is capable of carrying out missions in challenging scenarios.
The model carries up to 26 tons of payload and can operate on unpaved runways or in adverse conditions, such as gravel, grass or dirt.
This feature makes it ideal for humanitarian missions in remote areas, military operations in conflict zones and emergency responses to natural disasters.
In addition to transporting cargo and troops, the KC-390 is configurable for a wide range of missions:
- Aerial refueling, both as a tanker and as a receiver
- Medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), with installation of life support equipment
- Airdrop of cargo and paratroopers
- Fighting forest fires with water dispersal systems
- Logistical support in humanitarian actions and peace missions
The aircraft can also be quickly reconfigured according to the mission, without the need for lengthy technical adaptations.,
which guarantees agility and operational economy to the forces that use it.
Proven experience in real operations
Since its incorporation into the FAB fleet, the KC-390 has demonstrated its effectiveness in several critical situations.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the cargo ship was widely used to transport medical supplies, equipment and healthcare teams to hard-to-reach regions., including in the Amazon and in the interior of the Brazilian Northeast.
The aircraft also took part in rescue operations for flood victims in Rio Grande do Sul and in supporting Yanomami communities, affected by serious health crises.
In international missions, the KC-390 has already been present in operations in Lebanon, Haiti and, more recently, in Ukraine, demonstrating its response capacity in conflict and emergency scenarios.
The Brazilian Air Force currently has six operational KC-390 units and expects to receive more aircraft in the coming years, consolidating the platform as the backbone of military transport aviation in the country.
Recognition and competitiveness in the global market
Embraer's bet on the KC-390 has proven to be a good one given the positive reception the model has received abroad.
With lower operating costs than traditional competitors such as the C-130 Hercules,
and superior performance in several metrics, the Brazilian freighter is increasingly gaining space in the global defense market.
In addition to technical performance, Embraer offers a complete package of logistical support, team training and mission system customization, which has been a differentiator in negotiations with governments and air forces.
The Brazilian company has also invested in expanding its global maintenance and technical support network, aiming to ensure the continuous operation of its models abroad.
With its entry into new markets, such as Africa, the KC-390 could become a true “technological ambassador” for Brazil.
Outlook for the future
Defense industry experts believe the KC-390 still has great growth potential.
With international conflicts on the rise, more frequent climate disasters and the demand for strategic mobility in hard-to-reach regions, aircraft like the KC-390 tend to gain more and more relevance.
Embraer, in turn, continues to invest in the continuous improvement of the aircraft, seeking to adapt to the specific needs of each customer and the regulatory requirements of different regions of the world.
Embraer's advance with the KC-390 not only reinforces Brazil's leading role in the aerospace industry, but also consolidates the country as a reliable supplier of cutting-edge defense technology.
And you, do you think the KC-390 could become the world's main military cargo plane in the coming years?
