New Generation of Digital Television Brings More Quality, Interactivity, and Personalization, with Launch Expected by the 2026 World Cup

The President of Brazil signed on August 27, 2025, the decree that formalizes TV 3.0, called DTV+.

The new technology promises to transform the experience of open television. It will offer 4K and up to 8K resolution, immersive sound with cinema-quality, and unprecedented interactive features, at no additional cost.

According to the Ministry of Communications, the expectation is that the system will be operational before the 2026 World Cup.

However, the adoption will depend on the preparation of broadcasters. Additionally, several countries are already in the process of adapting to the technology.

Features of the New Digital Transmission

According to the Forum of the Brazilian System of Terrestrial Digital Television, in August 2024, TV 3.0 was renamed Digital Television+ (DTV+).

The technology uses the ATSC 3.0 standard, recognized worldwide as one of the most advanced digital transmission systems.

For the audience, this means:

  • Ultra-high definition images, with greater brightness, contrast, and clarity.
  • Surround and immersive sound, comparable to that of movie theaters.
  • Channels transformed into apps, offering navigation similar to Smart TVs.
  • Personalized advertising, with targeted ads based on user profiles.
  • Live interactivity, allowing voting on programs, participating in polls, and purchasing featured products.

Wilson Diniz, Secretary of Electronic Social Communication, explained that audiovisual quality will not depend on an internet connection.

However, the internet will enhance interactivity, enabling content synchronization, product purchases, and real-time interaction.

Personalized Experiences for the Audience

According to Leonora Bardini, Programming Director at TV Globo, TV 3.0 will recognize each user’s profile, offering content tailored to personal interests.

For example, in sports broadcasts, the technology could adapt the experience for fans of different teams. This will create a unique environment for each audience.

This personalization will also extend to advertising, similar to what already happens on social media.

Bardini stated that “as soon as the user connects, the TV will offer a tailored combination of programming and ads.”

Gradual Transition Process

The Minister of Communications, Frederico de Siqueira Filho, highlighted that no one will need to change their television immediately.

Initially, a compatible converter will be necessary, estimated to cost between R$ 300 and R$ 350. This statement was made in an interview with GloboNews on August 27, 2025.

As occurred in the transition from analog to digital signals, there will be a period of coexistence between the two technologies.

This process will start in the capitals. Complete replacement will happen gradually as current televisions are naturally replaced.

The government is considering subsidies for low-income families, following the model used in the past for the expansion of digital signals.

Perspectives for the Future of TV in Brazil

The expectation is that, in the medium term, new devices will come factory-equipped with built-in support for DTV+.

This will eliminate the need for converters. The television industry actively participates in discussions to ensure that the technology is incorporated from the production line.

Globo has already conducted experimental broadcasts in April 2025. These tests validated the feasibility of the system in the country.

Experts believe that TV 3.0 represents a milestone in the evolution of digital communication in Brazil.

It will bring the experience of open television closer to the convenience found in mobile devices.
