Technology Developed by Hubei Electric Power Research Institute and Wuhan State Grid Allowed a Chinese Robot to Perform Repairs on a Live 10 kV Transmission Line in Qingshan County, Eliminating the Direct Risk of Electrocution for Human Workers
A Chinese robot developed for electrical maintenance replaced human electricians during a repair on a 10 kV transmission line in Qingshan County, Hubei Province, carrying out the operation without direct intervention from workers.
Chinese Robot Executes Electrical Repairs on Live 10 kV Line
The Chinese robot was designed to perform complex repairs on energized electrical networks, substituting human electricians in tasks that typically involve high risk. The recent operation took place on a 10 kV transmission line located in Qingshan County, Hubei.
The technology was developed by the Hubei Electric Power Research Institute in partnership with the Wuhan State Grid. The goal of the system is to carry out critical interventions without putting workers in direct contact with energized cables.

Technology Uses Laser Cutting to Make Connections with Precision
During the repair, the Chinese robot utilized precision laser cutting technology to remove the rigid insulation from electrical cables. It then connected the branch wire to the main wire and tightened the necessary connections.
The process occurs with mechanical precision, without tremors and without the risk of human error. Automation also eliminates the risk of direct exposure to electricity during maintenance operations on energized lines.
System Designed to Operate in Complex Wiring Environments
According to Wu Xin, a technician from Wuhan State Grid, the Chinese robot can operate in environments with complex electrical networks. The system was designed to navigate between different cables and components present in the transmission infrastructure.
According to the technician, one of the main advantages of the technology is the complete elimination of the possibility of workers being electrocuted. This is because all steps of the intervention are executed by automated systems.
Chinese Robot Reduces Risks Faced by Electricians in Electrical Maintenance
Typically, electricians use special protective equipment to perform repairs on 10 kV transmission lines that remain energized. This procedure is necessary to avoid interruptions in power supply in the areas served by the grid.
Even with adequate protection, these operations involve high risks. An incorrect maneuver can lead to serious accidents during contact with energized cables.
With the introduction of the Chinese robot developed by the Wuhan State Grid, tasks considered dangerous can be transferred to automated systems. The proposal is to reduce human exposure in activities that historically result in thousands of deaths each year.
