Vehicle sales in 2026 grow 16.3% in Brazil, strengthening the automotive sector and boosting hybrids, electric vehicles, and automakers.

The Brazilian automotive sector started 2026 with strong growth. New car sales reached their highest level for the first four months since 2013, according to data released by the National Federation of Automotive Vehicle Distribution (Fenabrave) on May 5.

Between January and April, the country sold 1,734,599 units, including automobiles, light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and road implements. The result represents a 16.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The increase in vehicle sales in 2026 occurs amidst expanded promotions by automakers, tax incentives, and accelerated growth of hybrid and electric vehicles in the Brazilian automotive market.

New car sales surprise industry and reignite the Brazilian market

New car sales started 2026 above automakers’ expectations. The significant growth recorded by Fenabrave shows that Brazilian consumers have returned to seeking zero-kilometer vehicles more frequently.

The result represents the best performance for the period since 2013, reinforcing the gradual recovery of the automotive sector after years marked by economic crisis, pandemic, and high interest rates.

According to Arcelio Junior, president of Fenabrave, the automotive market started the year at a consistent pace, driven by price reductions and promotional actions carried out by manufacturers.

Among the factors that contributed to the growth are:

  • Greater credit availability;
  • Promotions at dealerships;
  • Tax incentives;
  • Expansion of hybrids and electric vehicles;
  • Increased consumer confidence.

Automotive sector reacts after years of difficulties and sales decline

The automotive sector faced a series of challenges in recent years. The pandemic affected industrial production, while inflation and high interest rates reduced the population’s purchasing power.

Furthermore, the global semiconductor crisis hampered vehicle manufacturing in several countries, including Brazil. At various times, automakers had to reduce or halt production lines.

Now, the scenario is different. The 16.3% growth in vehicle sales in 2026 shows that the automotive market has gradually regained strength. Fenabrave highlights that the combination of promotions, tax reductions, and increased competitiveness helped stimulate Brazilian consumers.

Sustainable Car Program boosts vehicle sales in 2026

The Sustainable Car Program appears as one of the main factors for the growth of the Brazilian automotive market. The initiative was created by the federal government in July 2025 to encourage less polluting vehicles.

According to Fenabrave, models covered by the program saw a 31.9% increase in sales compared to the period before the measure’s implementation.

The analysis considers the interval between July 11, 2025, and April 30, 2026, compared to the period between July 11, 2024, and April 30, 2025. Among the main objectives of the program are:

  • Renewal of the national fleet;
  • Reduction of emissions;
  • Incentive for energy efficiency;
  • Strengthening of the automotive industry;
  • Expansion of sustainable vehicles.

The automotive sector believes that the incentives helped increase consumer interest in more modern and economical models.

Automotive market registers explosion in hybrid and electric vehicle sales

The electrified vehicle segment was one of the highlights of vehicle sales in 2026. The accelerated growth shows that Brazilian consumers are more open to new technologies.

Hybrid cars and light commercial vehicles registered an increase of 71.53% in the first four months of this year. 90,485 units were sold between January and April 2026, compared to 52,752 in the same period of 2025. Pure electric vehicles, on the other hand, reached 48,401 units sold in 2026, while in the previous year the number had been 17,681 units.

The accumulated growth of electric vehicles reached 173.75%. When analyzing only April 2026 against April 2025, the increase was even greater: 272%. The Brazilian automotive market also began to receive more electrified models, mainly from Chinese and Asian brands.

New car sales boost economy and expand investments

The growth in new car sales has a direct impact on different sectors of the Brazilian economy. In addition to automakers, dealerships, banks, insurance companies, and parts manufacturers also benefit. The advancement of the automotive sector contributes to job creation and the strengthening of the industrial chain linked to vehicle production.

Several manufacturers have already announced investments in factory modernization and the launch of new models to meet the growing demand in the automotive market.

Among the segments currently growing the most are:

  • Hybrid SUVs;
  • Electrified pickup trucks;
  • Compact electric vehicles;
  • Connected models;
  • Cars focused on energy efficiency.

Experts believe that vehicle sales in 2026 could still grow in the coming months, provided the economic environment remains more stable.

Brazilian consumer changes profile and accelerates transformation of the automotive market

The growth of the automotive sector is not only linked to increased sales. The Brazilian market is also undergoing an important change in consumer behavior.

Today, many buyers seek more technological, economical, and sustainable vehicles. Connectivity features, energy efficiency, and safety have come to directly influence purchasing decisions.

The advance of hybrids and electric vehicles shows that the Brazilian automotive market is entering a new phase of technological transformation. Furthermore, automakers have increased competition in the country, expanding the variety of models available to consumers.

Brazilian automotive industry experiences new growth cycle

The numbers released by Fenabrave show that the Brazilian automotive sector regained strength in 2026. The total of 1,734,599 units sold in the first four months represents the best result since 2013.

New car sales grew driven by tax incentives, automaker promotions, the expansion of hybrids and electric vehicles, and greater consumer confidence.

The automotive market is also undergoing an important transformation with the arrival of new technologies and the strengthening of sustainable vehicles. If the pace continues throughout the year, vehicle sales in 2026 could consolidate one of the best recent moments for the automotive industry in Brazil.
