São Paulo Expands Monitoring With 649 New Radars On State Highways! Equipment Will Be Installed By May To Monitor 13 Thousand Km And Reinforce Traffic Safety.

649 New Radars: The state highways of São Paulo will receive a significant boost in traffic monitoring over the next three months, with the installation of new radars in various sections of the state. Although the responsible company has not officially released the information, it is available on the institution’s job site.

This Friday (February 14, 2025), the Department of Highways (DER), linked to the Secretariat of the Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics (Semil), signed the service order for the implementation of fixed radars on state highways. The measure aims to enhance road safety and monitor traffic, reducing violations and accidents in strategic sections of the São Paulo road network.

More Than 600 New Radars Coming To São Paulo

In total, 649 new radars on state highways will be installed within up to 90 days by the companies awarded in the bid. Thus, by May, the new radars in SP will be fully operational and will start issuing speed violation fines in non-conceded sections. The traffic monitoring measure aims to increase safety and reduce accidents.

According to DER-SP, the new radars in São Paulo will be placed at strategic points along more than 13 thousand kilometers on highways managed by the agency. The locations for the new radars on state highways have been mapped and are those that present the highest accident rates.

The study considered factors such as the type of recorded accident, speeding, the geometric conditions of the highway, possible critical points, and also the passage of wild animals.

According to the general coordinator of road operations at DER-SP, Ricardo Miguel do Nascimento, the installation of new radars in São Paulo helps reduce accidents, ensuring user safety and saving lives, as their presence generates respect for speed limits, improving drivers’ reaction time and mitigating the severity of potential impacts.

Functions Of Radars In Traffic Monitoring In SP

In addition to speed monitoring, the new radars on state highways that will monitor the São Paulo roads will be multitasking. They will be able to automatically count the axles of vehicles for statistical purposes and transmit real-time information to a DER-SP central. The new radars in São Paulo will be of the Fixed-Reducer and Fixed-Controller types, but without the Doppler effect.

The new Fixed-Reducer radars in SP will be located in urban areas, with a higher presence of cyclists and pedestrians. They will have a display to show vehicle speeds in real time. Meanwhile, the new Fixed-Controller radars on state highways will be responsible for monitoring rural sections with higher speeds. Both use an inductive loop embedded in a fixed point under the road surface.

DER Celebrates Completion Of Process Opened In 2023

According to Sergio Codelo, the superintendent of DER-SP, the new radars on state highways contracted by the agency demonstrate the commitment of the São Paulo government to prioritize user safety.

Additionally, it reinforces the message that every life matters. The goal is to go beyond the UN’s Second Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to halve road deaths and injuries by 2030. The agency aims to come as close as possible to zeroing this rate.

The new management of DER reviewed all ongoing bids and contracts as soon as it took office at the beginning of 2023. After analysis, new studies were conducted to assess the feasibility of installing new radars in São Paulo, as the old ones were removed in 2021, following the end of the contract with the responsible companies.

With the signing of the Service Order, DER celebrates the end of the process opened in 2023, which included companies such as Splice Indústria, Comércio e Serviços Ltda, Consórcio Conecta SP Rodovias, Consórcio Paulista de Fiscalização, and Tecdet Tecnologia Detecções Com. Imp, Exp. Ltda.
