New Tool From Unicamp and Repsol Sinopec Reduces Uncertainties, Automates Processes and Transforms Decisions in Oil Fields and CCS
A new tool developed in Brazil promises to transform the oil and carbon capture (CCS) industry.
It is the Flow2Seis, software that automatically connects 4D seismic data with reservoir models. Researchers from the Center for Energy and Petroleum Studies (CEPETRO), Unicamp, created the technology with funding from Repsol Sinopec Brasil (RSB).
The team started the project in August 2022 and completed it in April 2024, after validations with real cases. The National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) monitored and regulated the initiative.
Therefore, experts assure that the new tool enables precise and rapid calibration of geological models, improving decisions and reducing risks in production fields.

Technology Reduces Uncertainties and Increases Accuracy in Decisions
Flow2Seis automates tasks that previously required lengthy manual processes.
This way, companies can compare hundreds of geological models in just a few minutes, with greater reliability and less margin of error.
According to Alessandra Davólio, associate director of CEPETRO and research coordinator, the tool “accelerates decisions and improves reservoir management, both in oil extraction and carbon capture”.
Moreover, the innovation reduces uncertainties about the behavior of oil over time, which becomes essential for long-term projects.
Integration Between Geological Data Was an Old Challenge
The connection between seismic images and reservoir models represented one of the biggest technical hurdles in the industry.
Before Flow2Seis, engineers had to export data and manually adjust it between different software, which caused delays and technical dependency.
Daiane Rossi Rosa, a researcher with the UNISIM Group at CEPETRO, explains that “the information came from different sources and required a lot of effort for synchronization”.
However, with the new tool, it is possible to generate synthetic 4D seismic data from the models themselves, supported by modern computational visualization techniques.
As a result, the analysis time drastically decreases, while interpretative accuracy significantly increases.
Strategic Alignment with Decarbonization and Clean Energies
The creation of Flow2Seis reinforces Repsol Sinopec Brasil’s strategy to support clean technologies.
As Leonildes Soares, R&D manager at the company, explains, RSB directs more than half of its resources to low-carbon and renewable energy innovation.
“We believe that only technology can ensure a sustainable energy future”, Soares reinforces.
Additionally, this positioning is aligned with international commitments to energy transition and the constant search for solutions that balance production and environmental preservation.
Joint Development with National Technology Company
The company DeepSoft developed the system in direct collaboration with researchers at Unicamp.
For Marcos Pilato Jr., CEO of DeepSoft, “transforming academic ideas into a practical and accessible solution was our main challenge”.
Thus, Flow2Seis represents a significant advancement, as it integrates geology, geophysics, petrophysics, and computing into a single platform.
Consequently, the sector now has a high-performance solution that can offer unprecedented efficiency and interoperability.
Available for Companies and Research Centers
Energy companies and research institutions can already acquire Flow2Seis through DeepSoft.
According to Alessandra Davólio, the CEPETRO team plans to apply the tool in new projects later this year.
With this, the expectation is that the software will stimulate the digitalization of the Brazilian energy industry and further enhance national scientific production.
Potential for Technological and Economic Transformation
The impact of Flow2Seis goes beyond the limits of university research.
By automating analyses and shortening decisions, the tool reduces operational costs and accelerates field processes, leading to direct gains.
Additionally, the system opens up space for more effective environmental monitoring. It also allows for planning CO₂ injection strategies and recovering mature fields with greater control.
In this way, the project demonstrates how national science can generate strategic solutions for the future of the energy sector.
