R$ 14.2 billion project advances in the Campinas-São Paulo axis and rekindles expectations about regional rail transport, with the promise of more predictable trips, integration between cities, and direct impact on the routine of residents who depend on the route between the interior and the São Paulo capital.
The Intercity Train North Axis, a rail project estimated at R$ 14.2 billion, is expected to connect Campinas to the São Paulo capital in 64 minutes, with speeds of up to 140 km/h and an approximate capacity of 860 passengers per trip.
According to the São Paulo government, in an article published this Sunday (17), the initiative brings together three integrated fronts: the express service between São Paulo and Campinas, the Intermetropolitan Train between Jundiaí and Campinas, and the modernization of the Line 7-Rubi, currently the operational axis of the system.
The works began in the interior of São Paulo, with initial interventions in Vinhedo and gradual progress planned on the section between Campinas and Jundiaí, before expanding towards the capital.

The best city to live in Brazil has only 4,700 inhabitants, is located in the interior of São Paulo, and leads the ranking for the third consecutive year, driven by quality of life, sanitation, security, and revenue linked to the Embraer factory.
In this stage, the fronts include the installation of construction sites, support areas, land preparation, earthworks, containment, and the implementation of an underpass to the railway.
The proposal has a direct impact on the routine of those who depend on commuting between Campinas, Jundiaí, and São Paulo, especially for frequent trips for work, study, or family commitments.
The official forecast is that the project will benefit 11 municipalities and reach about 672,000 passengers per day, considering the set of integrated services.
Intercity Train advances in the Campinas-São Paulo axis
The North Axis TIC is presented by the São Paulo Government as Brazil’s first medium-speed train, with a route of 101 kilometers between Barra Funda Station, Jundiaí, and Campinas.

According to the disclosed model, the express service will have reserved seats and spaces for luggage and bicycles, with operations expected to start in 2031.
Besides the express train, the project includes the TIM, a stopping service of 44 kilometers between Jundiaí and Campinas, with stops in Louveira, Vinhedo, and Valinhos.
The forecast is that this axis will start operating before the TIC, with an estimated delivery for 2029 and a travel time of about 33 minutes.
The Line 7-Rubi, which connects Palmeiras-Barra Funda to Jundiaí, will be modernized within the same concession and will serve as a basis for the railway integration of the axis.
The TIC Trens concessionaire has taken over the operation and maintenance of the line and is also responsible for the implementation of the Intercity Train and the Intermetropolitan Train.
Mobility between Campinas, Jundiaí, and São Paulo
For Angelo Simonato, 35 years old, a resident of Campinas and an Information Technology professional, the advancement of the project has a meaning that goes beyond reducing travel time.
Passionate about trains since childhood, he associates the return of regional passenger rail transport with an idea of integration and economic development.
Born in Fernandópolis, in the interior of São Paulo, Simonato grew up observing railway compositions and came to see the tracks as a symbol of connection between cities.
“Trains have always been a mirror of the state’s development. ‘The locomotive of Brazil,’” he says, relating the project to São Paulo’s tradition of economic expansion supported by infrastructure.
The expectation also appears in the routine of Thiago de Moura Rodrigues, a lawyer, resident of Campinas, and father of a 3-year-old girl.
He works in an office in Vila Olímpia, São Paulo, and currently needs to organize trips based on traffic, variable schedules, and family commitments.
With the future railway connection, Thiago sees the possibility of reorganizing his schedule and reducing dependence on road transport.
Instead of measuring the commute by the unpredictability of the roads, he points to the regularity of the train as a gain to reconcile work, family time, and commitments in the capital.
64-minute trip changes regional routine
The expected reduction in the journey between Campinas and São Paulo tends to change how residents of the region plan in-person work, hybrid commutes, and family visits.
In an estimated journey of 64 minutes, the express train brings two of the state’s main economic regions closer without relying exclusively on highways.
In Thiago’s case, the expected change appears in concrete situations: more time with his daughter, less wear and tear on commutes, and greater ease in visiting his brother who lives in the capital.
The central issue for those who frequently make this journey is not just arriving faster, but reducing uncertainties that consume hours of the routine.
Predictability also matters for those living in intermediate cities served by the TIM.
With stops in Louveira, Vinhedo, and Valinhos, the stopping service extends the project’s function beyond the direct connection between Campinas and São Paulo, creating a regional rail alternative for daily commutes.

Line 7-Rubi will be modernized under the concession
The TIC Eixo Norte contract was structured as a public-private partnership, with a term of 30 years of concession.
According to official information from the state’s partnership program, the project foresees an investment of R$ 14.2 billion, an extension of 101 kilometers, and integration of services that share the existing and modernized railway infrastructure.
The concession involves the modernization of stations, systems, and the permanent way of Line 7-Rubi, a step considered necessary to accommodate the new operational arrangement.
From this base, the axis should combine metropolitan transport, regional stopping service, and express connection between the capital and Campinas.
The impact estimated by the government includes more than 10,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs during the implementation and operation of the project.
The official expectation also considers serving 15 million people in the involved regions, with effects on daily commutes and integration between urban centers.
The implementation, however, will proceed in stages.
The first interventions will focus on the interior, while the disclosed schedule foresees the TIM in 2029 and the TIC in 2031.
Until then, the modernization of Line 7-Rubi will be a central part of preparing the network to receive the new services.
The advancement of the Trem Intercidades places regional passenger rail transport at the center of São Paulo’s mobility agenda.
Between the fond memories of those who grew up admiring trains and the practical need of those facing long commutes, the project is now followed as an infrastructure work with direct effects on time, routine, and integration between cities.
