Understand how the date that won over fans worldwide, moves billions, and reinforces the cultural legacy of one of cinema’s greatest franchises came about
Celebrated annually on May 4th, the so-called “Star Wars Day” has established itself as one of the most iconic dates in global pop culture. What began as a simple linguistic play on words eventually transformed into a worldwide phenomenon, capable of mobilizing millions of fans and further boosting the value of a franchise that has already surpassed the US$10 billion mark in box office revenue from its films alone.
If you know someone passionate about the saga created by George Lucas, you’ve probably seen that person celebrate the date in some way. Whether rewatching the films, participating in themed events, or even wearing costumes inspired by iconic characters, May 4th has become a true ritual among admirers.
But after all, why has this specific date become so symbolic?

The curious origin of “May the 4th be with you”

The explanation begins with a pun that took on unexpected proportions. The famous phrase from the franchise — “May the Force be with you” (“Que a força esteja com você”) — was creatively adapted to “May the 4th be with you”. In English, “fourth” (quarto) sounds similar to “force” (força), which made the pun irresistible to fans.
According to the franchise’s official website, the first recorded appearance of this wordplay occurred in 1979, shortly after Margaret Thatcher’s election as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On that occasion, allies published an advertisement in the London Evening News newspaper with the message: “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations”.
In other words, initially, the phrase had no direct relation to fans or celebrations of the saga — it was merely a political tribute with a touch of humor.
However, over the years, the expression was appropriated by the public and gradually came to symbolize the passion for Star Wars. It was mainly from 2008 onwards that the date gained traction as a global event, driven by the internet and, subsequently, by The Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of the franchise.
From Cult Film to Billion-Dollar Entertainment Empire

Originally released in 1977 with Star Wars: A New Hope, the universe created by George Lucas evolved from a classic hero’s journey story into a true multimedia empire.
Over the decades, the franchise expanded its reach to series, books, games, theme parks, and a multitude of licensed products. Even so, the 11 films alone have been responsible for grossing over US$10 billion at the global box office — a number that highlights the saga’s economic impact.
Furthermore, success is not limited to financial gains. Star Wars has built one of the most engaged fan bases in entertainment history, spanning generations and cultures.
Dates that divide the geek calendar
Although May 4th is widely recognized as the main day of celebration for the franchise, it is not the only one. There is also May 25th, which carries multiple meanings within nerd culture.
This date marks the release of the first film in the saga, in 1977, but also coincides with the so-called “Nerd Pride Day” and “Towel Day,” in honor of Douglas Adams, creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
In this sense, the geek calendar ends up bringing together different traditions around close dates, which creates a kind of “symbolic dispute” between celebrations — although, in practice, fans celebrate them all.
How fans celebrate Star Wars Day today

Currently, the ways to celebrate Star Wars Day are as diverse as the saga’s universe itself. Among the most common practices are:
Rewatch the films in complete marathons, revisiting significant moments in history;
Wear clothes or costumes inspired by characters like Jedi, Sith, or rebel pilots;
Participate in themed events organized by fans, stores, and shopping centers;
Take advantage of special promotions on official franchise products.
In Brazil, Disney also usually promotes activations in shopping malls and specialized stores, especially in major capitals like São Paulo, offering immersive experiences and discounts on selected items.
Furthermore, the internet plays a fundamental role, with fans sharing tributes, memes, and exclusive content on social media, further expanding the date’s reach.
