Study Delivered to Sudene Proposes Terminal in Salgueiro and Points Out That Lack of Infrastructure Increases Fuel Prices in the Sertão; Transnordestina Is Seen as a Strategic Solution
The defense for the completion of the Pernambuco stretch of the Transnordestina Railway gained momentum this Tuesday (30), with the delivery of a technical study to the Superintendence of the Development of the Northeast (Sudene).
The analysis, presented by representatives of the Petroleum Workers Union of Pernambuco and Paraíba (Sindipetro PE/PB), highlights the strategic importance of the railway connection between Salgueiro and the Port of Suape.
Bottleneck in Fuel Distribution
The study points out that the lack of logistical infrastructure is a serious obstacle in the Sertão. Within a 250-kilometer radius from Salgueiro, only two distribution bases serve the region — located in Juazeiro (BA) and Crato (CE).

These bases are responsible for supplying 280 municipalities, spread across eight states, and serve an area that consumes 10% of all the fuel in the Northeast.
Impact on Prices Paid by the Population
This lack of structure directly impacts the consumer’s wallet. Data from the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP), mentioned in the document, reveal that residents of cities like Araripina and Petrolina pay, on average, R$ 0.50 more per liter of fuel compared to the capital, Recife.
Proposed Terminal in Salgueiro
The proposal from Sindipetro envisions the installation of a fuel storage terminal in Salgueiro, which would be connected to the railway.
According to the general coordinator of the entity, Sinésio Pontes, this would reduce logistics costs and the final price of the product, in addition to strengthening the regional economy.
He also highlighted the average monthly consumption of 150,000 cubic meters of fuel in the Northeast as an important factor for making the operation economically viable.
The study also shows that, in recent months, fuel sales in the region have grown: diesel rose by 4.9%, while gasoline increased by 3.1%. These figures, according to the document, indicate a growing and sustained demand, reinforcing the need to improve logistics.
Sudene Reinforces Role of Articulation
For the superintendent of Sudene, Danilo Cabral, delivering the study represents more than just a technical data point. It is a union of strategic interests around a common agenda.
“The Transnordestina is undoubtedly the most important logistical work in the Northeast,” he stated. He emphasized that the participation of Sindipetro shows that the resumption of the stretch to Suape depends on collective articulation.
The meeting also included directors from Sudene and representatives from Sindipetro, strengthening the debate about the future of the railway.
