Called Jorge D, the Tugboat Was Designed to Provide High Efficiency in Ship Handling Operations in Ports
Svitzer, a subsidiary of the Maersk Group, recently announced the delivery and incorporation of the newest azimuthal unit (AZD) to its fleet of ship tugboats in Brazil. The tugboat, named Jorge D and belonging to the Ramparts 2300 series, was designed to provide high efficiency in ship handling operations in ports, coastal towing, and other general towing services.
The ship tugboat Jorge D is part of a series of six tugboats built by Estaleiro Rio Maguari (ERM), in Pará. It has been optimized to achieve a speed of up to 13 knots and has a static traction of 70 tons (bollard pull). This state-of-the-art vessel will enable Svitzer to provide efficient and reliable ship handling services in the ports where it operates.
Contribution to Cleaner and More Sustainable Ship Handling Operations
Svitzer is committed to ambitious decarbonization goals and is constantly seeking to improve its ship handling capabilities. The use of the ASD tugboats from the Ramparts 2300 series allows the company to voluntarily comply with the maritime pollution prevention recommendations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), paving the way for Svitzer to carry out cleaner and more eco-friendly operations in Brazil.

Four 24-meter suction sails that generate up to 7 times more lift than traditional sails have been installed on a Maersk oil tanker. The autonomous system can reduce consumption by up to 20% and is already recording savings of up to 5.4 tons of fuel per day at sea, with annual cuts potentially reaching thousands of tons on a single vessel.
Strengthening Svitzer’s Presence in Brazil
The incorporation of the ship tugboat Jorge D is considered an important step in strengthening Svitzer’s presence in the Brazilian maritime industry. The company recognizes the strategic importance of Brazil as a key player in the global import and export ecosystem, especially in the supply of food and raw materials.
The general director of Svitzer in Brazil, Daniel Reedtz Cohen, emphasized that the fleet was designed and built to support port operations, such as berthing, unberthing, and escorting vessels, thus reducing excessive energy consumption and meeting the needs of most vessels operating along the Brazilian coast.
Conclusion on the Incorporation of Svitzer’s New Tugboat
The incorporation of the tugboat Jorge D into Svitzer’s fleet in Brazil is a significant milestone for the company. In addition to providing high efficiency in ship handling operations, the tugboat also contributes to cleaner and more sustainable operations, in compliance with IMO recommendations. Svitzer remains committed to enhancing its operations in the country, strengthening its presence in the Brazilian maritime industry and providing quality services for the import and export of goods.
