The Multimodal Project at the Port Will Meet the Growing Demand for Fertilizers in the Northern Arc Region
VLI and COPI celebrated the inauguration of the new logistics corridor for fertilizer imports at the Itaqui Port in São Luís (MA). With joint investments of about R$ 400 million, this multimodal project will meet the growing demand for fertilizers in the region of the Northern Arc of Brazil, according to Portos e Navios. This article will discuss the details of the corridor at the Itaqui Port, the operation involved in the project, and the benefits for the agricultural sector.
New Fertilizer Import Corridor at the Itaqui Port
The new fertilizer logistics corridor is the result of a partnership between VLI and COPI. The project, with investments of approximately R$ 400 million, has the capacity to move up to 1.5 million tons of fertilizers per year. Operational tests were conducted at the end of 2022, and in 2023, more than 100 thousand tons of inputs have already been transported through the port corridor. This initiative aims to meet the demand of producers located in states like Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Bahia, Piauí, Tocantins, Maranhão, and the Federal District.
The inauguration of the new project for fertilizer imports at the Itaqui Port represents an important milestone for the agricultural sector in the Northern Arc region. The partnership between VLI and COPI will enable efficient transport of fertilizer inputs to the producing areas and the export of the harvest to Maranhão’s port system. Additionally, the establishment of the industrial hub at the Palmeirante Integrator Terminal will boost the socioeconomic development of the region, promoting industrialization and attracting investments from diverse sectors.

Project Operation and Investments
The operation of the new import corridor consists of loading by COPI at the Itaqui Port of VLI compositions. Subsequently, the cargo is transported by rail to the Palmeirante Integrator Terminal (TIPA), in Tocantins. COPI designed and built a new structure at TIPA for the reception, storage, and shipping of fertilizers.
In addition, equipment such as locomotives and wagons were acquired to increase cargo movement capacity. These investments in the project add to VLI’s fleet already operating in the Central-North Corridor, connecting Maranhão and Tocantins.
Industrial Hub and Development in the Port Region
The inauguration of the fertilizer logistics corridor at the Itaqui Port marks the first step towards the creation of a large industrial hub at the Palmeirante Integrator Terminal. With an area of approximately 230 hectares, this terminal offers leasing opportunities for fertilizer importing companies, agricultural traders, and other sectors interested in establishing and operating on-site.
The proximity to rail operations and storage capacity are significant advantages for efficiency gains. The first major investment in this hub was announced by Mosaic Fertilizantes, which will invest R$ 400 million in a mixing, storage, and distribution unit at VLI’s terminal. Other companies are also in negotiations to operate in the TIPA project.
