Reduction in Natural Gas Tariffs in February in Rio: Up to -3.97% for CNG, -1.85% Commercial, -1.78% Residential and -3.76% Industrial.
In a move that could transform the market, the reduction in natural gas tariffs has already started to impact various economic sectors. Starting in February 2023, Rio de Janeiro experienced a significant drop in prices, with CNG becoming up to 3.97% cheaper, a relief for many consumers. Naturgy confirmed that tariffs will face negative adjustments, citing the decline in gas acquisition costs from Petrobras as the main reason. This scenario was detailed by Agência Brasil, highlighting expectations of a positive impact on inflation in the coming months.
The drop in natural gas prices mainly impacts large industry, commercial and residential sectors, but it is in the mining sector that a transformative potential is seen. With tariffs reduced by up to 3.76% for industrial use, mining companies can lower operational costs and continue expansion projects. Revista Exame recently reported that this relief in tariffs is essential to maintain the global competitiveness of the Brazilian extractive industry, further encouraging investments in technology and energy efficiency.
Impact on the Industrial Sector: Mining and Mineral Exploration
Experts point out that the impact on the industrial sector, especially in terms of mineral exploration, is significant. Mining companies are seizing this opportunity to expand their operations, focusing on more economical extraction methods. The Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) noted an increase in profit margins for companies in the sector, directly correlating with the decrease in energy expenses. This movement has the potential to increase employment levels and strengthen the local economy.

It is not only cost that matters but also the perspective of more sustainable consumption. With the energy transition on the agenda, the mining industry is seeking new ways to reduce its environmental impact, leveraging lower natural gas tariffs to invest in innovative technologies. According to Valor Econômico, the expectation is that leading companies in the sector could achieve up to 20% efficiency in their operations.
Finally, the combination of lower natural gas prices and technological advancements promises to transform the mining landscape in Brazil. The integration of sustainable practices not only improves the image of companies but also ensures a greener and more responsible future. As reported by Gazeta do Povo, the forecast is that this cycle of changes will continue reverberating throughout 2023 as more companies adopt these innovative standards. The result is a more robust and adaptable sector, ready to face future challenges.
